You don't have to put any ATF in the torque converter; it will fill fine by itself.

I can't recall how much ATF is needed in the L4N71b. Have 8 quarts on hand; if the converter has been drained, you'll probably need about 5-6, is my guess.

Yes, the ATF pump, which is driven by the "outside"/shell of the torque converter, will fill the converter.

Sorry, I didn't read where you are. I'll do better next time ;)

The 1981 FSM, page AT-62, says:

Drive plate to torque converter
39-49 N-m
4.0-5.0 kg-m
29-36 ft-lb

The 1984 FSM says the same.

I can't find my 1982 & 1983 FSMs right now.

haha all good...cheers for the torques...

the replacement engine has a few differences to the one that came out..

old one:

oil cooler unit on the filter housing
front sump
different looking IP only slightly though..

new one:

no oil cooler on the filter, and it sticks straight out rather than on an angle
mid sump

and one was manual and one was auto..the end of the crank is different too..
so the torque convertor has no bush to sit into...it should be ok as its fixed onto the flex plate....

all the turbo bits are being put on to the new motor too
