Here are some more search results from today:
"Goodyear Engineered Products has developed a hose that is resistant to the degrading effect. The fuel line, such as Goodyear Flexsteel, Ambassador, and BC Gasoline Marina, is currently available and was displayed at the recent Association for Hose and Accessories Distribution convention. Sounds like a killer party, eh? Still, such a product gives even more mainstream backing to an alternative fuel looking for its big break."

How will the industrial paint hose hold up to underhood heat, ie >100°C ?ecomike wrote:Well thats it then, that chart confirms that nylon, specifically nylon 6/6, but still nylon, is unaffected by biodiesel even B100. Therefore the nylon tube lined, industrial paint hose should be an excellant lower cost choice for fuel hose.

Don't know the absolute upper temperature limit but we use to use this hose on heated paint lines that got up as high as 160 to 180 F, at 50 to 60 PSI, as I recall. Based on my experience it should be good for 200 F on the inside fluid temperature, that is the nylon should handle up to about 200 F., which should be way more than adequite.
The exterior cover should be equivalent to or better than regular fuel hose as far as the temperature limit and solvent (fuel) resistance goes. It is probably as good as radiator hose, temperature wise which regularly handles up to 210 F as the outer cover materials are similar.
Are you worried about heated fuel lines? How hot do they get? Surely not over 130 or 140 F?
Maybe we can get someone to try it on one small length that is easy to check and replace, someone who is using BD-100 already.
As for me, I am now more afraid of biodiesel nailing the seals in my IP and thus damaging the engine after what I read last night. I read a story about some guy's rotory IP seals leaking after using BD which flooded the engine and destroyed it,
Since SD22's and their IP's don't grow on trees yet, I think I will stick with good ol #2 diesel and my PS (Power Service) additives!
I am using the PS "Diesel Fuel Supplement + Cetane Boost with SlickDiesel", 32 oz. treats 100 gallons. Costs about $6 to $8 depending on where you buy it in Houston. Made in Weatherford Texas. Part number is 1025.

The IP leakage problem is with the VE IPs. AFAIK, the inline pumps (ie SD22) aren't affected.
The VE IPs do not leak internally when they leak, they leak off the top cover, the distributor housing seal at the lines end, and the front shaft seal. This is a very common problem with the VWs.
The inline IP on the SD22 is gear-driven and does have a connection to the sump. If it leaked at the shaft seal it would definitely leak to the sump, which would be a Bad Thing, but you'd notice the smell a long while before it would do damaged, because you'd smell the BD vapours from the road draft tube.
The VE IPs are usually belt-driven, and when the shaft seal leaks, it doesn't leak into the sump.
The SD23/25 sometimes use a VE IP, and I think that they are probably gear-driven too (Philip will know), so that might be a concern, but if you have an inline IP on your SD22, I don't see any reason for concern about IP leakage.
The fuel will not be very warm, except for WVO folks and Philip with his fuel preheater. But the hoses are exposed to underhood temp, and that can be pretty toasty.

Re: Biodiesel fuel line replacement on '82 720 SD22
Al. While you had the fuel tank out on the floor, did you happen to look inside the tank ... looking for a fuel inlet filter sock? I'm growing curious if one is fitted or not and if there is one, how do you service it.

While I didn't see an inlet filter sock, and I don't think that it had one, I cannot rule out the possibility. Sorry I can't be of more concrete help.
It's possible that I'll have one of the 720 diesel tanks out later this summer -- I may have found a donor truck that can accept the SD22 that I sold to my friend in a very rusty '82 PU that he's driving but would like to transplant before winter.

i went to look for replacement hoses for my peugot because it blew a main return line. it has been running b99.9 for the last year so all the hoses sweat bio. i went to nappa and spent some time reading the catalog and found that their standard fuel injection hoses are lined with floroelastomer which is aparently the generic chemical name for viton then a layer of fabric reinforcement of some kind and then a more normal rubber like nitrile exterior.
its nice to know i can just go to nappa if i need to.

Didja happen to get NAPA's part number for the fuel-injection line? I know it's different from the std fuel line.
One other problem is that it's not available (or didn't used to be available) in metric diameters. This isn't a problem for 8mm lines (use 5/16"), and 6mm is pretty darned close to 1/4", but it's a major problem for 10mm and 7mm and 3mm lines (well, you can fudge 3/8" onto 10mm but I don't like it). IIRC, Gates mfgrs the NAPA fuel lines.

the part number listed on my reciept is H-204. i don't know for sure if that is the one in the catalog. i will go back and find out -but the only distinguishing thing i remember in the catalog is that it was a fuel injection line suitable for gas, alchohol and diesel

This appears to be Gates 27094
Perhaps a better researcher than I can get the material specs for this part; I've given up after half an hour.

Just called custemer service and they gave me this number to call. I'm leaving for a vacation and won't be able to call on Monday (being in HI has disadvantages: everything closes on the mainland by noontime HI time).
1-800-366-3128
I'd be interested to know the mat. specs myself. I want to replace all the fuel hoses to biodiesel resistant ones.

That's the first step! Now -somebody- needs to look up the spec at Gates or SAE to find out just what is meant by "multi-fuel"?ocd wrote:the hose itself reads FUEL INJECTION (MULTI-FUEL COMPATABILITY) SAE30R9 GATES RUBBER COMPANY MADE IN MEXICO AM051205
