The GPs are not wired to the battery directly, there's at least one relay, and two relays for the Type 2 system. Follow Philip's link above. Given good connections, the OEM GP control system works well. See also my GP connectors post for a look at some of the OEM connector trouble spots.
A bungee cord is somewhat acceptable for these rigs as the battery box is frequently rusted out & gone.
