Vacuum Pump Oil Line

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Vacuum Pump Oil Line

#1

Post by philip »

When I had the alternator out to do preventative maintenance (check bearings, connections, replace brushes, etc), I noticed the oil line feeding the vacuum pump was made of rubber. This hose feeds off the gallery feeding the oil cooling jets so there is close to system pressure present. Since this line was 23 yrs old, WAY past time for replacement.

I contacted a couple of dealers and was told a new hose would come from Japan ... some day. Not good enough. I contacted a local hydraulic hose maker Hose Man and had them reuse the original fittings on a length of braided stainless. Overkill but ... they had it back to me in 24 hrs for $32.

What's the right way to take this hose off? If you start loosening it on the vacuum pump end it will "want" to tighten on the other end.

While replacing the alternator I ended up unscrewing the vacuum pump off the hose instead unscrewing the hose from the pump. In the process I busted the fitting, so now I have a nice oil leak at both ends (fittings) ... and will have to get a new hose made like yours. Still, I don't want to do the same mistake again.

thanks

The end that screws to the engine is actually a swivel, and screws to an adapter, which screws into the block. Loosen the engine end (two wrenches: one for the swivel, one for the adapter), and then you can unscrew the hose from the pump.

At least, that's the way I'm remembering it. I haven't done one in a while.

(memory check: OK) -Philip

Thanks!!

I got it out... Now I see. Had I known that it's a swivel on the other end, I could have saved a trip to the hydraulic hose shop... Oh well, it was time to replace it anyway.

I ran down to Hydra Air Pacific, the biggest hose fitting company in Honolulu. They cannot reuse the old fittings and using their own, the actual hose part would be like 3 inches ... way too little flexibility to put it in IMO. They would charge around 30 bucks. I called around two more places and they all told me they cannot do it or refered me to Hydra Air.

So I was very frusrated, I was contemplating to call Hose Man in CA ... then I thought I might as well try Nissan and ...TADA !! , they have the hose for $20.

There MUST be a miscommunication involved. Hose Man simply ground off the swedge sleeves, pulled the old hose off the barbbed fittings, installed new hose with new swedge sleeves, crimped 'em, ... job done.

As usual ... Philip is right. When I got to the dealership the clerk showed me the hose that feeds air to the pump... FAST was showing it as an oil return hose...

So there are two hoses available: one is for $48 the other one is $82. The difference is 2" in length b/w the two. I will look at the pictures he got from Nissan America on Monday to see if the cheaper will do. Othewise I am mailing the one I have to Hose Man.

As for Hydra Air Pacific, all I told them was that I wanted to reuse the old fittings and they told me that they couldn't do it. IMO it was just a lack of imagination on their part, or that I was just too little customer for their operation to go the extra mile. They are pretty much the only hose fitting place in Hawaii, and they have the whole fishing fleet, construction vehicles and big trucks to serve.

I was asking about this line earlier and IMO it would be easy enough to convert the NPT ( 1/8 ) to -6 AN lines which can be made from a simple order to Summit Racing. They'll be alittle cheaper, hold up, and they look cooler.

i got this hose delivered from japan, through my localish nissan dealer, to canada for $78. 1/2 of that shipping. its rubber, with the fittings. soon after, i read phillips post. i did not know there is a such thing as a "local hose builder", naturally, the shop i get most of my parts from make hoses all day long for the loggers. duh.

The clerk showed me a photo of both hoses aligned next to each other: the original costs $82. The one that supersedes it (and I ordered) is 14665-T9002, about one inch longer than the original one, and goes for $47.09 before taxes. I will post pictures as soon I get it.

http://www.BuyNissanParts.com has this hose for $27.73 wholesale! (MSRP $37.73).

They are getting $15.62 for the #14670G7004 oil return hose (low pressure return line).
