1983 Volvo 245 Wagon, $350 (OBO)

Buy it, sell it, negotiate, haggle, drag it out from under the workbench or behind the garage and make it someone else's problem!

1983 Volvo 245 Wagon, $350 (OBO)

Originally bought for use as a "parts car", this runner is just not really needed anymore.

It is in Carlton, Ore. Owner has an '84, decided he doesn't need the '83 after all. It lived in Lincoln City, so there is some corrosion, but no rust-through.

I got called in because it wouldn't start. Turned out to be corroded fuse No. 12, got the fuel pump relay power.

It runs & drives. It has a list of issues. It is blue -- mostly. It's a Wagon. 2.3l Four, 4-spd + electric OD (Gear Vendors style). OD does not work (is usually either lack of ATF or electric switch issue: easy fixes). Shifts well, clutch works well. Seized/dragging LF brake caliper. ODO reads 149999 and does not move -- the usual VDO speedo problem.

Interiour a bit dirty but headliner OK, seats mostly OK. Manual windows & locks. Clean engine, idles on three but compression test OK (105->120 PSI). Plug wires very old and plugs very worn but plugs pretty clean. No blue smoke, no obvious huge oil leaks. Just changed the oil & filter, and the fuel filter (if you've ever replaced a Volvo FI fuel filter, you KNOW that this is a $100 job, and I just did it, last week). Possibly if you replace the plugs/wires/cap/rotor it might idle on all four, but I'm thinking it will need injector cleaning or replacement -- or to merely put some miles on it, as it hasn't been driven 100 miles in several years. Comes with 3/4 tank of fuel. Tabs well expired. Title can be acquired but is not in hand at the moment.

Rear suspension bushings real loose. Driveable. Common problem. Exhaust system is sound (a rarity). Needs two new muffler hanger donuts -- bailing wire is doing the job at the moment. Exhaust leak at headpipe-to-manifold. Could use cooling system flush. Several lights are not working. Panasonic radio does play OK. Spare holds air. New rear shocks. Tires have some weather checking. Battery is a five-year Exide on its sixth year, so it's shot -- but will start the car the same day it's charged up -- amazingly. Belts are OK. Charging system passes. Has A/C and the compressor runs quiet, but does not cool. Heater blower is non-op (if it's the blower motor, that's a major chore to replace. I did not diagnose it.).

And like that. I think it could be driven home, except that I'm leery of ruining the rotor with that siezed caliper issue.

Contact me if you're interested and I'll put you in touch with the owner. Price is flexible but not free.
Regards,
Al S.

In addition to the above list, the wiper motor died on it. He'll take less for this now, as it really needs to go. Hoping to find a 245 aficionado for it.
