Cost to rebuild SD22?

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Cost to rebuild SD22?

#1

Post by neilm »

What should I expect to pay for a good rebuild on my '83 SD22? And who in SoCal should I take it to?

Thanks!

Your expecting depends. Are you going to hand over the truck or, hand over a complete engine that -you- pulled from your own truck or, are you handing over the engine minus the cyl head? And in what area? Los Angeles or Chicago vs some abscure farm town? You may well find it costs a lot less by using another used engine.

Philip has covered the basic territory: are you going to do the R&R on the engine, or are you washing your hands of it and limiting yourself to handing money to someone?

If the latter, I would ballpark about $3000. If the former, about $1200 less. Those are just off-the-cuff guesstimates, but I did used to do this kind of thing for a living, sorta.

Alternatives include a used engine, but it is difficult to self-analyze a used diesel, esp. if it is not installed where you can actually run or drive it. An engine sitting on a warehouse shelf could be in any imaginable condition, and few of them arrive there in pristine or "like-new" condition. It is a crap shoot, even with a warranty.

If you do most of the work yourself, you should have the FSM and a lot of time, but all but the most finicky parts can be accomplished with basic tools, patience, and a lot of cleaning of parts. Regrinding the crank, R&R the sleeves, installing the cam brgs, those are tasks you'd farm out, but much of the rest you can possibly do yourself, with the exception of the fuel injection system, which is too specialized for most folks to tackle. If you suspect that the IP needs to be rebuilt, add $800.

HTH.

Those numbers are around what I expected... since I don't have a place to work on it much, I'd need the rebuilder to pull & replace the engine.. I don't know if he could sleeve it in the truck.

I'm in the Palm Springs / Indio area... nobody here has ever heard of these, the local diesel shops are oriented to MD & HD trucks and busses; they don't want to talk much about these little buggers.

I have the name of Material Handling, in Santa Fe Springs I think - they claim they work on SD22 forklift motors. Does anyone have any experiance with them? It seems like there was an outfit in Fresno, too... Jess, or Jesse or someting like that.

Thanks again;

I was in La Quinta all day on May 18. How funny. Was in the truck too.

I also know DSI and Material Handling Supply....

I would really like to ride in one of these that runs well.... I suspect I'm not getting anywhere near the full power out of this one, but can't compare directly; without another one around.

Let me know next time you're coming down, maybe I can spot you a lunch.. <G>
