Overheat coolant - SD25 D21 1987 Nissan

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Agreeing with Steve: you have not found a definite path of combustion gasses to the cooling system, unless your machine shop can spot it on the head gasket.

Lacking evidence, I'd pay the $100 for the test. And $100 seems a bit steep, too, but may be the prevailing price in your area.

So based on this statement they must have told you the head is warped? If it isn't I see no value in having it planed, and I assume they know it cannot be planed with the prechambers installed?
after oil wrote:should i worry about the cracks between the valve seats?
That's what the pressure test would findout, whether the cracks are far enough past the valve seats to create a compression leak.

In your specific case, there is evidence of pressure leakage between cyls 2-3 and etching around each cylinder and several coolant passages. $65 CAD well spent.
al:
I would probably not have it surfaced
me quoting head shop guy:
he says the crack between the valve seats is almost never a problem, except on chevy's. i could send it away to have it pressure tested for $100, but he says ill probably be wasting my money.
steve a:
If all you had was gasket failure and there was no head warpage I would spend my money on the pressure test and do a thorough cleaning of the existing surface. I would hate to have it planed and reinstalled only then to find that there's a compression leak.

it was suggested by shop guy that there was evidence of fluids passing between ports.

it might be too late:
the head will be planed and ready for tomorrow.
i could still send it to presurre test.... part of the CAD$100 is shipping.

I'm not saying what they're doing wasn't necessary, it just didn't seem to me that they were following a logical pattern for diagnosis. Where cracks are involved a pressure test is a must.

Yes you could, but if it came back needing to be welded it would certainly suggest that repairs were performed in reverse order. The planing work is the last work done.

it freakin' cost CAD$595.44 (USD$507.63)

$60 to reface
$210 to clean/grind valves
$49 to remove broken stud (i didnt know there was a broken stud)
$207 for the gaskets
$68 tax for the man

it was the $210 for the valves that took me by surprise.

ill get photos of the aformentioned cracks between valve seats.

and gasket #'s too.

Your valves must have had a LOT of "valve face recession" that rendered them unserviceable (beyond regrinding). Sodium filled valves are common on diesels, they are more expensive, and the SD does use them. Full retail pop for an exhaust valve is about $23 USD.

I look forward to seeing -which- valves were bad (intakes or exhausts). A close-up photo of the worst "valve face" would be interesting. Is possible?

Engine repairs have a lot in common with house repairs ... there is ALWAYS more damage than what you see.

I wonder just what the hell they did. I, too, would be surprised if presented with a bill like that. A four-cylinder grind can run that much, certainly, but that math just looks wrong.

I am planning a rebuild of my SD 22. Does anyone have recommendations for a shop in the Tacoma WA area for cylinder head R&R?

i just put the head on. found the valve clearances on the inside of the hood.

problem: i forgot to put the little orange rubber o-ring in. its from the rear passenger side of the block. goes in a hole in the block, under the head gasket.

damn
that math just looks wrong.
it adds up to $595 what looks wrong? (other than its just plain wrong to gouge me like that)

Three times $70 looks wrong.

Joe, I don't know of a Puget Sound head rebuilder that I would go back to. One may exist, but I don't know it.

And I don't know what that means. No shop grinds only three valves/seats, and even if they did, it's not a $70 job.

It doesn't add up. Something's fishy.
