I still have one crankshaft, piston rods and an injection pump for the VW 1.6L Diesel engine. All are in very good shape.

I believed that the cranks are interchangeable but not 100% sure.

Every time I drove from Seattle to Portland, I'd get out with a headache. The great mileage isn't worth the cost (to me).
I've heard that the same engine in a north/south arrangement in the Dasher/Quantum does not suffer the same interiour noise problem. I don't think I've ever driven a Dasher diesel long enough to know (ie on the highway).
I'm thinking of a Sentra diesel or one of the Toyota diesels (Corolla, Camry). I'm leaning toward the Camry. There's another '84 Camry diesel in PDX, though with a valves-contacted-piston issue that I'm not sure I want to get involved with.

Rare Ford Escort Diesel Wagon - $500 (North Seattle)

Ok, this car isn't pretty. It's old and funky and I bought it with the intention of fixing it up because it's a rare and unique car. It's an stock 84 Ford Escort with a Mazda RF 2.0L diesel engine. Great engine, gets high 40's mpg when tuned up. When I bought it, the charging system was shot, so I purchased a new battery, alternator and regulator. Then the heated fuel filter went out, so I replaced that with a heated Racor marine filter and I replaced all the fuel lines. I ran it on Bio Diesel for a few months, then the water pump went out. I purchased a new water pump, but I never finished installing it because it needs a new timing belt at the same time. I ran out of time and money. My daughter lost the ignition key so it needs to have one made. It needs a brake job. That's about it, all in all if you are mechanically inclined or know someone who is, you can have a very cool diesel car with a weekend of work. I'm really motivated to sell this vehicle as I don't have any more space for it, so I will listen to all offers. Any other questions, please call me or email. 206.245.0814Thanks.

From the 1980s-early 1990s Sentras that I've driven, they seem as tin-canny as anything on the road. I've owned a 1981 Rabbit diesel, and it didn't seem terribly louder than many other small economy cars of that vintage. I did drive around for a year without any interior (carpet & floor padding, headliner, seats), and WOW yes, it's wicked loud, and I donned the earplugs prior to driving every day.
The 720 pickup took the cake for loudest on the highway in my book. I almost always used ear plugs when driving mine on the open road. On the maiden voyage from eastern WA to my home, I had to stop after a half hour and stuff tissue in my ears because my head ached so bad.
