Yesterday, I was corresponding with someone in the Seattle area who is looking to buy a Maxima diesel, and he said that he's pulled that crank already.

Wow...that fast! You guys were lucky to have gotten to that one first. Is that salvage yard really that popular?

The salvage yards in Iowa tend to remain stagnant sometimes for long periods. I stumbled upon a 85 MB 380SE that had H1/H4 euro lamps at what used to be a very popular salvage yard. The diver lamp was like new, the passenger lamp had actually been broken at the yard by someone moving cars with a fork-lift. There were lots of other goodies as well.

That JY has become part of a U-Pull-It chain, and it's very much in urbia. It's known for quite a ways around, even though it's in the middle of about three JYs all in a row on Hwy 99. Part of a strip mall area in Lynnwood.

Unlike other yards, they crush one whole row per week, regardless of what's in that row. The '83 Sedan gasser was in "next week's row" when I got the wheel arch trim off of it (I guess I should have pulled the half-shafts, but I didn't have time, and I don't own a Sedan); the '82 Wagon that Carimbo & I stripped was about six or seven rows beyond that in the rotation, and is probably still there for another week or two.

It's not a great JY, but it is cheap. Another JY in the same chain down further south in Tacoma has a reputation for charging for every nut & bolt -- buy a head, pay for each used spark plug, each glow plug, the cam charged separately, etc. The Lynnwood yard is pretty lax about what's in your wheelbarrow -- the counter help is so slammed just processing the inflow/outgo that they just want to keep the line moving, is the feeling I get.

When I lived in Portland, I knew where every JY was and enjoyed many a sunny afternnoon in many of them. One downside to living in the paradise I do, is that there are only two JYs in this county, and they're both really bad ones.

Al S.

One of the yards around Des Moines is going to a methodology similar to this. The yard intends to do a complete stock rotation every 45 days, which if you ask me is foolish. For some makes I can see this as justified, I mean really, how many Cavaliers do you want there!

There are special cases where one could justify letting it sit for a longer time in the yard or creating a special section for older classic / rarer cars. At one point in their other yard there was stock that had been sitting for over 20 years. When they finally crushed it out no one paid any attention to it even though there was a lot of good crap in there that no one had even looked at in 10 years.

It's too bad there's a Peugeot 504 in the Lynnwood yard, do you think that it's been crushed by now?

Oh, yeah, it's been gone for a couple of weeks for sure. I haven't been back in three weeks, but it was only a couple of rows from its expiration date.

I posted my WTB: Diesel Maxima on ZCar.com and some guy PM'd me saying he just ripped the crank out of a diesel max and hadn't seen my ad before hand (like he would have saved it or something? :roll:). He then asked if there is anything I wanted from the motor. I did not think about the IP :headbang:

If anyone is interested I can PM the guy and see if he still has anything. Who knows, might be the same guy that has the crank on eBay.

The top of my list to salvage from an LD28:

* alternator (special housing & rotor)
* Starter (the diesel version *might* work on the gasser; I don't know)
* IP
* Injectors (cores)
* GPs (good for testing anyway)
* Temp. sensor for the GPC, on thermostat housing
* PS pump, if you think you might need one, as the two gasser ones won't fit the LD28

Shipping on most of those negates much of the value to me, as I already have spares. The alternator is almost always worth shipping though (the vac pumps are very hardy and rarely fail), as they go bad. Starters are plentiful in the aftermarket, so have less value as a used unit. IP? Well, they are a lot of work to replace and time, but I just feel better having a spare. If yours leaks at the front seal, it's much easier to replace the shaft seal in the car. Having a spare set of injectors is nice when having them rebuilt, you can have the car down for less time. Temp sensor is nice to have for troubleshooting.

Personally, I will pay up to $40 shipped for a working alternator. I don't need an IP and hope that one of you will try to keep it out of the scrap heap.

Al S.

I'll send him an e-mail this evening and see if he has disposed of it yet. If not, I may make him an offer on the lot (minus the block and head of course) and have him ship it to me.

If that works out, everything (but the IP) may be up for grabs. I would just need the shipping cost and a marginal amount for the item depending on what kind of deal he can make me.

I'll keep everyone posted.

That's why I've stopped asking the eBay crank guys. It's always the same, "I recycled them . . . ".

That is quite a bit of money- talk about false economy when building a stroker!

Could just buy a turnkey SBC for 2-3k and you'd lose weight and go faster
