Consuming 4 liters oil per 600km!

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

After replacing all the valve guide oil seals ... what is the new distance per oil quart?

Was there any other "fixes" when you had these seal replaced?

Philip, I am still assembling the engine. I am doing the bearings and syncros on my transmission as well. I will post pictures and data on my "project" when the finish line gets closer. I am also going to repaint the truck while I have most of the running gear out. Oh yes did I mention I am also rebuilding the front end, new control arm bushings top and bottom, ball joints, tie rods etc. Shouldn't be bored for a while

i took off the manifold yesterday. i wont bother uploading the photos yet b/c my computer is screwin up and freezing again.
but what i saw was:
intake manifold a little oily and gritty.
exhaust:
cylinder 1, inside the head has a smear of oil that follows a path, its not all over the inside. this is the cylinder suspected of having worn oil ring
cyls 2 and 3 seem to be weeping oil at the valve seals, just a few drops on the valve stems. cyl 4 is clean and dry.
all cyls are otherwise dry and sooty

please accept my apoligies for "bumping" this post. i hope someone will notice now and give me some ideas about the oil inside the head coming from the exhaust valve of cyl 1, and the weeping oil around the exhaust valve stem seals in cyl 2 and 3.

and im having a hell of a time getting pistons and rings! anyone in winnipeg? http://www.pistonringservice.com/ has the parts, but wont sell them to me!! they said i could come down to the store and get them...

Al has put to you ....

Al's observation ...
"The reason this idea is so attractive is that it corresponds with the both the symptoms and the timeframe: reasonable oil consumption before taking off the head, unreasonable after. And Paul didn't do the head work so he doesn't know for certain what transpired or how it was assembled. Which is why I've asked three times to look at the valve stem seals: not because valve stem seals are a real likely candidate for that much oil consumption, but because it's possible and it fits the whole scenario, unlike the other guesses."

i posted the best photos i could of the valve springs. i could try to remove some springs, but i havent got the tools.

[later]

i brought the head to someone who has the tools and can inspect the seals for us!

Do look at how THESE oil seals must be installed for SD22's. Included with the seals is a thin plastic "slip" over the valve stem each time a seal is installed and then ... pulled away before installing the springs. It will be included with the seals box. The purpose is to prevent seal lip damage as it slides past the stem groove.

It is quite possible to rip the seal lips yet ... the seal "looks" install and good.

Ok. It is clear that:

1) you won't say another word about oil seals
2) you believe something awful happened recent that toasted pistons and/or rings.

(followup): The ROUND ports are the EXHAUST ... which I don't care much about. The OVAL ports are the INTAKE ... which I do care about.

SO .... you have one useful photo ... the one of the entire head sitting on a wood bench ... with sunlight. Could you photo that one again but this time ... from a slightly higher view or .... from the opposite side? I'm looking for a view that includes where the springs meet the cylinder head.

Thank you, in advance.

i dont know what to say! the head is at a mechanics and he is inspecting it more closely.

again a case of mechanics' differing opinions! maybe i wont need the rings and piston, but considering the hardship getting them, at least i have them if i or anyone else around here needs them.

DARN! i thought all along the exhaust had the clues, but i guess after thinking a little about it the oil in the exhaust must be blowing by, not combusting (DUH)!
there hasnt been much sunlight here the last few days, and the head is in the shop for inpsection, but as soon as i know more you can bet i will post it

Al and I have always agreed that valve stem seals must be reviewed first because ... your oil consumption was NOT a problem until after your cylinder head was worked on.

Seals first. And then only if found sound .... the rings.

the guy finally looked at the head and said the seals are fine! he said that he could see lots of oil in the valves of 2 and 3, indicating blowby becuase of excessive compression. that the compression was getting higher as it went back becuase of the blowby from the worn ring in cyl 1, or something like that.

the rings arrived, $135 for the rings, $30 to rush them on the bus. i picked up the piston in bellingham, it was $80 including the shipping from ohio.

my computer is topsy turvy lately, lost of freeze ups, viruses getting in etc!! and ive been busy with other things.

im going on a week long mountaineering adventure in the coast mountains so aint nothin gonna happen with the truck till after that.

Having just followed my own advise, I found that I'd missed a step.
asavage wrote:Off the top of my head, you might consider . . .
  • Make up an adapter for my GP adapter ;) to connect shop air to it.
  • Remove Schrader valve from the tip of the GP adapter.
  • Bring a cylinder up to TDC, valves closed. Exact TDC is required.
  • Remove oil filter.
  • Use shop compressed air, pressurize cylinder to max shop air pressure (100 PSI or better).
