Anybody know the bolt size for the bolt that holds on the camshaft gear?

Also, all the bolts that hold down the cyl head are hex bolts right? no allen key or torx type bolts

And last of all, are there any specialty tools needed to pull the head and take off the valve springs besides a spring compresssor? Im doing the valve stem seals and replacing the manifold studs while im at it, and I dont want any surprises. When I pull the camshaft to take off the valve springs would I need to put assy. lube on it or would the oil in there already suffice?

Suggest you get a FSM; it will answer all your questions and give you the confidence you need to proceed. Best investment I have made yet-- for the car, that is.

Is this still part of "Small overheating problem" post? If not, do a favor to those who come here in the future trying to do their research and start a new appropriately titled thread.

How is your new fan/clutch setup working?

A couple of pages back, Kassim did a overnight cooling system pressure check, and hydrolocked the engine. He's hoping a new head gasket etc. will cure the coolant loss. So it's sort of tied in with the overheating thread.

OK, somehow I missed that. And I see Kassim has the FSM. It would be better if I kept my mouth shut!

In THIS THREAD, anything goes. Having the FSM is not enough. Ya gotta read it too! Then you have to ask the obvious. If there is consensus of opinion, counter it with wishful thinking. Knowledge is power but a little knowledge is dangerous and wisdom is NOT in the FSM.

I'm not sure where you're going with this, Philip. Could you expand on that?

I should have a firmer grasp of this helm than Kassim? I know not the next pitch or yaw this overheated topic will make through troubled waters. Cool waters run deep. Is that an ice burg ahead? Damn the torpedos, full speed a-head.

I have the FSM and read the section on pulling the head, I was jsut making sure there was nothing lost in translation with the FSM (note the gramatical errors from page Gl-1 to EL-171). But I must say the FSM saved me many times over and over, and its the best investment I have ever made- ever :)

I just dont like pulling heads, Even though I have done it several times in my life I still despise the job, actually I dread the job.

Oh and the horribly tight 4 seasons fan clutch has loosened up a bit, now the fan keeps quiet until the needle reads 1/4 from the C, when I finish the gasket (s) Im going to swap it over for a clutch that actually disengages. But the nice fancy metal fan looks so nice under the hood, it compliments the rest of the engine

This person cracked the head on their car fooling around with a problem until enough people could give advice, yada yada. I sold him a head and fan clutch.
Well, I'm not 100% sure that is what caused my cracked cylinder head because at a later point I had the fan turning fine when the engine was running. The problem is it may have not be turning while going down the road at higher speeds, which may have been what screwed me. It's my first vehicle I've ever overheated with such a bad result, so live and learn.

Salvy. Once you're past about 30-35 mph, you do not need a fan at all (assuming a healthy cooling system). I've demonstrated that fact by taking the fan out altogether from last November until here recently when ambient temperatures reached the high 90's in Los Angeles traffic. No Fan Clutch story

LOL!

On another less funny note, the fsm describes dissembling cyl head on pg em-7, it says to loosen the rocker lock nut, is the lock nut the nut closest to the base of the rocker (furthest away from the head)? Also illustrated in picture em711 the valve spring is being pushed down by a screwdrive shaped object, do they want me to use a screwdriver? or to use the valve spring compressor on it.

Also the camshaft thrust plate- noted on pg em-15 (step 2 on the assy cyl head) is there to hold the cam in place when I step on the brake and go downhill right? How come it wasnt shown in the dissasembly of the cyl head?

And to agree with philip fans urually are there for show at speeds over 40 mph, usually there is adequate airflow after that from the wind blowing at the car (unless youre in a 1990+ Camaro, or you are driving with the wind in a hurricane  )
