Jet-A in the SD22

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Jet-A in the SD22

#1

Post by bacho »

Well today I decided to fill up the truck with Jet-A just for fun. At the moment it runs just the same with no noticable change in power, on the good side is that my EGT seems to be slightly down. It seems to heat up a little slower when you just stab the throttle on a hill. But it will heat up to nearly the same high temp. I have only run it today and I have 30 more gallons to burn up so I will update with a longer term update and mabye mix is with some diesel. I will also try some cetane booster mabye when this tank is close to empty.

50 mile update, EGT definetly lower running on the jet fuel. I cant see too much black smoke on accel so I am gonna turn up the fuel some more to see what happens.

Put the smoke screw one more turn out. 10-11 PSI boost and it really pulls hard once it starts building it. My EGT is still lower than on diesel. I did a hill climb yesterday that my truck used to hit 1,150 on about halfway up so I would have to back way off. Now the truck will go full power up it and not even heat up to 1,100. On the downside though the truck is less responsive under 5-6lbs boost becasue of the smoke screw being out so much. I think I am out 3.5 turns from stock.

I was reading that JET-A has no lubricity compared to diesel ... something to keep in mind if you decide to extend your experiment.

Its back on diesel at the moment. The first tank got no oil added, however I have been talking to some people and found an old timer who would put mystery marvel oil in it for lubricity. Another respectable guy said to run it in ratio with the diesel. I will mix it with diesel next, I ran the tank empty and was forced to get diesel again and it doesnt really make the same amount of power for the fuel settings. you have to go much lighter on the gas to not get excessive smoke.

In theory, kerosene -- a class of fuel of which jet-a is a member -- has less lubricating properties than D2, and contains fewer BTUs per unit volume. This implies that fuel mileage should drop when running kerosene, and EGT should be lower due to the lower per-unit BTUs available.

That it all true as for what I found. While the power loss seemed to be minimal the EGT was significantly down. So I added much more fuel and started making a noticable difference in added power while still having a lower EGT.

For MPG, its way down. It went from about 28 to 18,
