I've never owned a rear-wheel drive car/truck before and I always thought that the driving wheels use up the tires faster. Is that true? Or it depends how much weight rides on the axles? I usually run the truck empty or just a long surf board on the bed, so most of the weight is in the front. The previous owner put a new pair of tires in the front and I am wondering if I should rotate them back.

Na, unless you like burnouts the front tires wear faster becasue of worn joints, and scrub when turning. An old IFS is harder on a set of tires than a solid axle typically. As for performance, its also the normal to place the better tires on the front. In the rain if the rear tires brake loose you can have a hope of recovery using your front tires. If your fronts brake loose you have much less chance of recovery meaning you end up in the ditch.
