I have a question about Oil Filter specs. Actually, I need an opinion. I have been looking at a couple of differnt filters. Both by the same manufacturer. One has a Nominal Micron Rating of 24 with a "Beta Ratio" of 2/20 = 20/44. The other filter has a Nomimal Micron Rating of 17 with no "Beta Ratio" listed. What is the opinion(s) on what the better filter would be. I am leaning towards the 17 micron one, but do not completly understand the whole "Beta Ratio" thing and how it works. Both filters are the exact same in all other aspects, ID, OD, Height, GPM, Burst Pressure, etc etc.

Paul,
a decent explanation of the beta (and alpha) ratio as it relates to oil filtration can be found on the cummins website.

this links directly to a pdf , so you gotta have a reader.

So if I do my cyphers right here then, the 24 micron filter that shows the Beta Ratio traps all particles of the 24 micron size but also traps particles as small at 20 microns 44% of the time? But the 17 micron filter with no Beta ratio traps particles 17 microns in size 100% of the time? The 17 micron filter would be a better filter then?
Did I figure this and understand it correctly?

Oh yeah!
Thanks for the link

Paul,
The way I figure it,
The stated beta ratios are probably : B20=2 and B44=20
so: at 20 micron, 50% is caught and at 44 micron 95% is caught.
The second filter has no performance data, but if the beta ratios are similar to the nominal 24 micron filter, the 17 micron one will catch a little more junk. I don't know if it actually matters weather a filter is 17 vs. 24 microns for lube oil.
Do you know what the spec for the Nissan filter is?
Best luck,

Have been searching everywhere for the rating (15209 J6502) and cannot find it. I guess I would have to actually send something off to Nissan and see if they will release that info. I know it has a "stand pipe" in it and it is a 1" thread but other than that I cant seem to find any performance data on it.
