300d turbodiesel vs Maxima Diesel 5 speed vs 760 turbo diese

I was curious and ran my 87 300d turbo diesel 144k against my 320k maxima diesel.
Amazingly the Max pulled one car on the Benz and after 75mph kept pulling more and more.

Also ran my Volvo 760 zTurbo diesel and the Max also came up on top.

According to automotive press the Volvo 760 turbo diesel was the fastest diesel in the 80s

The Max out accelerates the Volvo and trounces it on the highway.

I guess I have a fast one.

Maybe the 760 needs some tuning. The Max is lighter than the Benz and almost certainly lighter than the 760 - that counts for a lot, but it also makes it noisier.

I bet this topic gets bumped to OT... <g>

The Volvo has an OHC Six, not a Four. It's 2.4l and one or two years ('85-86?) are turbocharged.

IIRC the turbo diesel 6 is supposed to be the "good" diesel in (older) Volvos. I think the oil passages in the head got changed a little so the valve train at the back didn't get starved, it got an upgraded thicker block (frm the the NA version) and there was oil cooling nozzles for the piston skirts.

its the same family as the 4cyl in the jetta and the 5cyl in the audi it just has another cylinder. the turbo blocks got thicker head bolts and piston squirters among others to handle the boost. in europe the 6cyl went into a VW commercial truck -the only way it made it into this country was in the 7xx series volvo. the 2xx series got the n/a block. stock the turbo block produces about 140ft/lbs of torque.

the nice thing about the volvo is the aftermarket performance suspension bits available: poly bushings, 25mm sway bars, upper strut braces, adjustable panhard bars, lowering springs...

when we got ours it already had poly bushings, bilstiens shocks, performance tires all around and front and rear sway bars and cornered like it was on rails. :D when i found the stock air box leaky and brittle i pieced something cheap and easy together involving an enormous cone filter($22), i could hear the turbo whistle -that was fun. the leather interior is nice too. the last fill up it got 31.4mpg mixed driving. not bad for a 3450lb sedan with all the earodynamics of stacked bricks. its towing capacity is just about right for a cord of firewood.

tuning and timing really effects the performance and they like a lot of attention. for some reason they put the ip driven by a belt facing the fire wall making it much more difficult to check, adjust timing and change belts and shafts seals. the coolant temp sensor is really high up on the block so if there happens to be a catastrophic hose failure the coolant drops below that sensor so usually that means its too late before it shows on the gauge(something they fixed in later models after they stopped inporting them into the states -they also fitted them with intercoolers too). the wiring insulation in the engine bay is crumbling so there is bare wires in several places but a new harness is available for a few hundred bones.
 i'm over it -my partner drives it -i'm tired of hearing "its making a funny noise when..." anybody want to trade for a honda?
