Dashpot Question

I've got an 82 720 with the SD22.

I remember reading some where that the dashpot is intended to act as cushion of sorts so the butterfly doesn't slam shut when you take your foot off the gas quickly.

Well mine doesn't work and hasn't since I got the truck. Is there really any need or benefit to having this component. If so, is there a place to get one at a reasonable price.
