New SD-22 owner with questions about building a generator.

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

New SD-22 owner with questions about building a generator.

So I picked up an SD22 engine and transmission on a front clip of a 720 pickup truck frame a couple weeks ago.

I bled the injection pump lines and the engine fired up with about 30 minutes of work.

I'm wanting to build a 10,000 watt generator and I have this Nissan SD-22 engine and a Datsun A14 gasser carbed motor, and am not sure which one would be better to use.

The SD-22 is guessed to have 110,000-115,000 miles on it, and is in pretty good shape. I know basically nothing about this engine other than it sat for around a decade before I bought it. It needs fresh oil and a few coolant lines.
When I first fired it up I let it run for about 20 minutes and had a few pinholes in some of the rubber water lines on the side of the block. I do not have the DPC module, and have to manually control the injection pump.

The A14 has 160,000 miles on it and munched the transmission, but runs pretty good. It was in my 81 Datsun/Nissan 210.

Any advice for building a generator? It needs to be smaller so I would have to remove the transmission and build a plate to mount the starter on to, which is no big deal.
Any pictures of any SD powered generators?

We are a race team and are looking to build a generator that can run at idle and power our equipment at the track without having a 5000 watt generator blasting our ears out all day... our race cars do that enough!!! I figure with an SD-22 or A14 with a couple mufflers added on, it could run just above idle and make all the power we need to run a small welder or other equipment (lighting, fans, computers, etc...)

Definitely the diesel. The SD22 is like most diesels in that usable torque starts well down in the RPM range. In addition, there are belt driven mechanical speed governors and electronic speed governors available which can be bolted on to your engine to keep engine speed constant for generating purposes. Another option is to use a low voltage/hi amperage output alternator, rectify the output into DC, and use that DC to feed an inverter... Soooo many things to try:-)
