Hi, selling a very rare 1986 Jeep Cherokee Diesel, it has a factory 2.1 Renault turbo diesel engine, 5 speed transmission, and is 4x4. Body in good shape, clear title, Was running and driving well, but now needs a new timing chain. This is a project, would have to be towed. $850 in Oregon City, Oregon.

Just guessing, but if that belt was off or broken when the engine was turning, probably the engine is not even salvageable (new pistons and valves at the least). But I don't know that Renault engine.
There is also another one on Ebay with a little less than 100,000 miles on it and needs a rebuild already. That is sad and I wouldn't trust that Renault diesel engine for 40-50,000 troublefree miles. I don't think it was a very successful engine and I do believe they had a cast aluminum block and head (a huge turn off for wanting the typical heavy duty build a diesel is supposed to receive in those days). But finding those 80's Jeep diesels are cool because they are indeed rare to find. I'm sure it will sell too.

The Renault 2.1 was less robust than the 2.3 or 2.5 Peugeot TD engine. It was an aluminum head mated to a cast iron block, like Peugeot, VW or BMW.
If this were close to me I would have to have it. I turned one down years back and always kicked myself for doing so. If someone from the list were close to it I'd have them go look at it but as it is it's too far away for me to accomplish right now. I might email the seller, I'm not interested if the engine lost the timing belt while it was running...obviously!
Steve, Oregon City is basically SE Portland and encompasses Willamette Falls (a great place to take visiting-from-out-of-town friends). We have members in Portland.
I'm not a big fan of Cherokees -- I think they drive like rocky Astro vans -- but they are durable.
I've seen two of the diesel Cherokees, but I've also seen something even rarer: a 2WD Cherokee. One of my former clients.

I emailed the seller to find out what happened to the timing belt. My guess is that it was never replaced and it broke, but we'll see. A broken belt on this engine would render it scrap, these engines are not abundant and other than the Le Sharo motorhome I can't recall an application with the Renault 2.1 L TD engine.

I would have to agree with you on this, they ride like a buckboard, but I like them because these early ones still somewhat remind me of the early wagoneer. The drivetrain could be used in a Comanche possibly although this engine does not have the durability of the LD28 by any means.

That is a rare bird and I can't claim to have seen one of those!
It's too bad for this engine, there are very few examples around for parts unless you run into a LeSharo motorhome in a JY
The Renault 2.1 seems an unlikely candidate for a vehicle like the Jeep. It would have been better suited to use the Peugeot 2.5 TD engine which utilized chain driven timing components and could be intercooled to achieve 115hp. Besides, the Jeep was already by this time using the BA10 5 speed trans which mates to the 2.3 / 2.5 without modification. Perhaps it can be bolted to the Renault powerplant as well.
