83 LD GP Issues

I acquired an 83 diesel with a no-start issue. Some fumbling around under the hood revealed a burned wire leading to a box (now known as the dropping resistor). I inserted a large fuse into the wires and voila! it runs. After that success, I went on to research the 'box'. It appears that it took a large load and burned the wire at the connector. I checked it with an ohm meter and it shows a short between the two wires. I get the feeling (from lurking the site) that the dropping resistor is necessary. So. Two questions. Well, three. Do I really need the dropping resistor? If I do, where might I find one? Caveat; at a reasonable cost. And last, is there a mod I could throw in like a high ceramic resistor and if so at what resistance?

The dropping resistor has 0.5 Ohms and at least 50 Watts or more power rating. The dropping resistor is needed for the GP afterglow operation, to reduce smoke. It is activated after the pre-glow time, when the light goes off. At that point, engine should be running. If the dropping resistor is still good, then I would cut off the burnt plug and hard-wire it. There is a schematic for the auto-glow system floating around this board.
