wtb:clutch fan+ TPS

Buy it, sell it, negotiate, haggle, drag it out from under the workbench or behind the garage and make it someone else's problem!

wtb:clutch fan+ TPS

#1

Post by kassim503 »

Anybody got a extra fan clutch laying around? I need one on the cheap, and since my cooling system hates me, the new/old clutch went out. Anybody heard of re-packing it with 120W gear oil? I heard it from sombody, but I think there may be a shaft leak, and I might be seeing play in the bearings, so its best not to mess around, and try to do it right.

Also, I think I need a new throttle position sensor, I feel that the unit is not going off the idle position early enough anymore, Even when i advance the adjustment right to the end, i still get a nothing on the TPS until i press a little further. It should read idle right until i tap on the gas right? Ive been getting a surging if i rev it in neutral, and when i connect it to my car computer tester and ovveride the sensor, rev it to 1700, watch it surge, put it in the middle position, the car runs smooth again.

Does it "freewheel" or does it leak?

This thing is not really a TPS in the modern sense -- it is not a potentiometer. It is two switches (actually, SPDT: see this post for more info on SPDT switches). It senses Idle position, and Full Throttle position, and not-Idle-not-Full-Throttle. That's all the information it provides to the ECM. Take the cover off and look at it. You can pull the harness connector and put a circuit checker (DVM, for example) on the center terminal and either side terminal and have a helper actuate the linkage to check each side of the switch's operation.

Electrically, it is more likely that the switch no longer correctly signals Idle position, than that it signals Idle too long. However, mechanically that may be possible. You will be able to SEE the switch in operation if you remove the cover, IIRC.

yea, that is what id figure. I would think there would be two switches, but i think there is a big dead spot on the idle, to the point wehre i cant adjust it so itll almost perform right. ill try pulling the cover.

The fan is freewheeling, im not sure if its leaking much. Seal seams like its leaking a very small amount, nothing much. But then again a little is alot for a fan clutch, much like a differential on a smaller scale.

Bought a new NAPA one, cooling problems solved. I just have to figure out where a dangling vaccuum line is connecting to and whats up with the TPS and my car should be back to normal.

You know, this is really the ending to the longest-running cooling thread this board has seen (so far).

Great news! I actually did some work, readjusted the tps, it actually came loose because sombody didnt tighten it fully after adjusting it, oh well, that is done, and yes to my relif the fan clutch solved all my cooling problems that i had, now if i just done this a year ago-- lol

Im actually not afraid to let the car idle by itself anymore and I have stopped eyeing the temp gauge like a hawk
