Will a Turbo get my LD28 up the hills?
I have a Jaguar which had a LD28T when I first bought it. It was gutless as a snail. I put it down to a stuffed diesel pump. Instead I put in another LD28 without a turbo. The car went smoother and queiter.
I am wishing to put the turbo on to the new engine, with a new turbo of course. I will buy this one http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-par ... 852282.htm.
This is my concern. The country I live in (New Zealand) is very hilly. When my Jag goes up the hills it struggles. I get passed by fill buses and loaded truck and trailers. I was going up the Bomb Bay Hills and I was passed by a Isuzu Bighorn 3.2 Diesel Turbo doing 120kph, I could only get the Jag up at 78kph, and that was at full throttle. This is the same speed my Jag done with the previous turbo LD28T engine. When the car is on the flat it drives very well, but come to a hill and it kills it. I have retarded the timing and advanced it, and obviously it goes a bit better when advanced, but knocks real loud. I have also changed the injectors with no notice in performance and also screwed the fuel screw out and it just makes it smoke more.
What my question is, if I invest in this turbo conversion is it going to get my cars up those hills better?
Thanks in advance

Try turning the fuel screw IN for more fuel.hamahona wrote:...and also screwed the fuel screw out and it just makes it smoke more.
Also: What is your air intake like? (Tubing length/diameter, filter type, etc.)
Exhaust? Gearing?
Finally: What is the weight of the Jag? Maxima LD28 gives acceptable performance (except at altitude) but weighs under 3000 lb.

Woops, I meant I screwed the fuel screw in.
Im using the factory Jaguar aircleaner, the plastic pipe to the aircleaner is about 1 meter. I tried taking it up hills with the aircleaner removed from the intake manifold and it still sluggy.
Exhaust is factory Jaguar, which is one pipe that goes into 4 mufflers, split 2 per side.
Final drive is 3.07
The Jag weighs 4,065lb

I would venture your tranny has a lot to do with it. That being it probably hard for most us drivers to be able to visual it. Taking a ford lazer from christchurch to akora harbor was pushing it, we often had to pull over to keep the brake from lighting on fire. My 1n-t tercel makes it up the hills no problem, my c233 pick up stuggles as soon as I hit any incline. So based on that I think a turbo will help but not probablyy enough to overcome the 3 speed.

I have the same 'frustration' when going uphill with my C32 Laurel.
1.4 ton car, 80 hp, tall gears....It struggles keeping 80kph uphill@3000 rpm.
If let the trans lockup @ around 2500 rpm it smokes like a train
At 3000 rpm there's almost no smoke but no acceleration as well.
No wonder the Jag is a slug, being heavier than the Laurel/Maxima.
To be honest, overtaking is quite a challenge with my car. 0-100kph in 20 seconds is not fun in certain circumstances

Ok I stuck this turbo on it. http://scarles.co.nz/index.php?main_pag ... cts_id=148
I choose this one as it had a internal wastegate, the only catch is you had to drill a hole for the wastegate and fit it. I would of got a turbo more suitable for low rev diesel but this was the only one that had a wastegate option.
I fitted it and the wastegate would not fit due to positioning of the outlet pipe so I badly modified it with a exhaust clamp. This resulted in only a 3 pound boost.
The results were terrible. The car did not get up the hills better, maybe an increase of 2kph. So what I am guessing is the wastegate is not working.
I have been reading that diesels dont really need wastegates. So I am going to have the hole I made for the wastegate welded up and see how it performs then.
Im going to be selling the car, its way too slow on hills but cheap to run. 10km to a litre

I put a boost gauge on it and it gets 3psi top, averages 1psi thou. I did adjust the fuel and it made no difference, I think due to the low boost. Will see how it goes when I have the wastegate removed and wastegate hole welded up.

After I got my RaJay turbo broken in, my LD would hit 12-14 psi without even touching the smoke screw, if I was really on it. Hitting 8-9 psi is easy.
Something must certainly be wrong with your turbo setup, because I can steadily and quickly accelerate ever faster even up a long hill, even through 5th gear in many cases. It doesn't seem like the heavy vehicle weight or automatic tranny would stop a turbocharged LD from pushing your car up a hill.
My setup has no wastegate at all, just a 2.5" downpipe and straight exhaust.

Thats good to hear another LD28 not using a wastegate.
The pipe that goes from the turbo to the Inlet manifold was split open. So maybe thats one reason why Im having problems along with the bad wastegate.
I have removed the wastegate and blocked the hole but have the engine out at the moment, had a dose of badly dirty oil which blocked the pickup sump.
When I bought the turbo I bought one with a wastegate. This turbo give best power at high revs so maybe this could be why its still slow.
When I get it running well I will write here the results.

My Astro weighs 4000 LBS and behaves similar. I have a 5-speed (gasser) manual tranny and switch to 4th on uphills. As long as the engine revs above 2700 it pulls. A true diesel tranny has better gear ratios but hard to find. I changed ring/pinion to 3.73. Much better, but 3.90 would be optimal
What you can do:
smaller tires (low profile 60), smaller rims from chevy, change ring/pinion.
