Today in town: $2.87/Gal Diesel and $1.97/Gal gas. At the truck-stop should be a dime cheaper.

Today in Vancouver, WA at 76 Station diesel was $2.57/gal and at Shell in another part of town, $2.49/gal. Finally some movement.

Diesel in New Zealand now sells for NZD1.12/litre which is great for the summer drive season downunder.
NZD1.12=USD0.63
1 litre = 0.26Gal therefore 3.78 litres per US Gal
USD2.38/USGal
Then theres the road taxes... this has recently increased so is now equal to USD108/3100miles which is relatively less than before due to an increased NZD value against the greenback

Amazing
The price for gasoline went up while diesel fuel went down. Usually it was the opposite. Gas price now $2.16/gal and diesel $2.41/gal just $0.25 difference. Did not see that for years.

Once again, price difference between gasoline and diesel fuel is 30 cents, more for diesel. This time they have no explanation why the difference except, that there is a shortage. There are shortages year round now.
I do not see any future for diesel-powered cars in this country. New diesel cars were promised 2009 and 2010. Did not happen. With that price difference is also not worth to get a new diesel powered car if it was available. New generation gasoline cars get better mileage each model year. I drove recently my 1998 Dodge Neon to Tucson, AZ and back, 1500 miles each way and got up to 46 mpg. That's better than my old VW Rabbit Diesel, faster and more comfortable. So why bother.
I am seriously considering converting my Chevy Astro Diesel back to gasoline.

Diesel and regular are about the same around SF bay; diesel was about .10 less for a couple months.
But you're right. Fuel price can't justify diesels. Looks like the oil companies want to kill that type of fuel for private car use. Must be more markup on gas.
Maybe the maintenance costs and reliability might weigh on the diesel sideif you keep the vehicle for more than 5 years. The LD28 has cost a valve setting, oil and filters and fuel additive for 3-1/2 (40k) for me. It might be time for a water pump and definitely time for a fuel filter, but tha'ts only $50 or so more. The car isn't so great but it hasn't dumped me on the pavement yet. I seem to get about 24-25mpg in the city which is at least 2-3 better than any comparable vehicle I've seen anywhere near my price range (I put large tires on it when the old ones went south but that's not an engine related cost).
How's the Astro working out otherwise? Here in California, a pre-98 diesel in a pre-98 chassis is best way to repower w/out big smog hassles. The Astro conversion still looks like it might be good here. Can you fit a turbo under there? That might better the mpg a little; wouldn't necessarily need to change the fueling.. .
The high mpg engines seem to all be recent tech and very pricey. I guess you could put a 2005+ engine and exhaust into something but it doesn't look like a no-brainer. Also the new vehnicles are made lighter and that helps a lot w/the mpg; don't think you'd get the same results w/a new engine in a heavy old chassis.

I drove the Astro in April to Arizona via Nevada. Fuel prices for gasoline ranged between $2.69 and $2.99 and for Diesel fuel $2.99 and $3.29.
California does not have the big pricing difference however, their prices started at $2.99/gal for gasoline.
I am getting an average of 20-23 mpg highway mileage, that's not bad for a 4000 LBS vehicle but not great either. A genuine diesel 5-speed MT may further improve fuel economy and performance but I could not find one.
Biggest bummer is the loss of power on long inclines or strong head-winds.
I am afraid of turbo-charging this engine as there was never a factory turbo for the LD28. Read stories of blown head gaskets and high oil consumption after turboing the engine. Head gasket are hard to get.
A modern CRD engine would be the way to go but none were ever imported to the US. We are stuck with that old 1980's technology.

Gas is even more expensive, over 5$/gallon.
This hurts, having in mind the what's the average salary here in Romania (~400$/month)
The biggest problem is the tax system. Engines bigger that 2L have high taxes. I'm paying for the LD28 almost 20 times more than for a 1.6 liter (600$/year).
