Running LD20T II on the bench

#1

Post by wbrproductions »

Hello -
Anyone have experience running your Nissan diesel on the bench or ground, before dropping it into the donor car?

I bought my LD20T-II on ebay, and there's a youtube video of the thing running before they shipped it out. However, I'd like to do the same test, make sure the exhaust manifold gasket is OK, amongst other things (like extreme curiosity).

I've got diesel fuel in via a hand-pump, and I'm catching the excess. Got a good connection between the battery and the starter solenoid (and back), and using a starter test switch between the solenoid start wire and the starter feed. Getting plenty of juice to turn the starter.

Also using a trick davehoos outlined for the glow plug wire - connecting it to the solenoid start wire, so it'll only be engaged when the starter is.

Do I need 12v to the IP as well (gray connector in the foreground)?

The motor so far is not firing...

Also, on a completely unrelated note, why is there an oil pump on the back of the alternator?

Thanks in advance. I've learned more in a week about diesels from this forum than I thought possible.

need power to the IP.this is the fuel shut of solinoid.

oil fed vacume pump on rear of alternator is for the brake booster and other vac controlled items.

dont crank for too long-not good for glow plugs and starter motor.

if the engines been sitting for long time remove glow plugs and add oil, then crank the engine over to spread the oil around inside.
i normally bleed the fuel check oil pressure etc doing this.
this can give that extra compression when you go to start it.

Just a quick check: You've got the thing set so there's NO WAY it's going to bounce around or fall over, right? <g> Any engine can buck around a lot when starting cantankerously and diesels do it as SOP - also and especially when stopping.

Yup, its stable on its stand and also attached to a ceiling hoist.

But I do appreciate the heads-up, as it bucked like a bronco when I attached 12V to the IP and it FIRED RIGHT UP!

thanks to davehoos and rlaggren for the tips.

If you're feeding the IP from a separate pump, make damned sure that you're also running it through a diesel fuel filter. The VE-style IP is not at all tolerant of any dirt at all.
