Note no crankcase depression regulator, and no oil cooler. I'm guessing perhaps an industrial engine? It has a PS pump though. Does not have the Maxima Cold Start Device.

I would agree that it might be industrial but it's mated to a standard AT (I think) so given that I don't know much about the different incarnations or changes between models, could it be from a very early 1981 Max?

Looks like a 5-speed.

But $1500...seems like an awful lot.

There's another fellow in FL that imports diesel engines & trans, goes by the eBay name of "exprtintl" or something like that, he sells the LD28s for $1000-$1500. I should say "sells", because I've never seen one of his LD28s actually sell. And they're all odd-looking to us, because they have more modern accessories, brackets, etc.

I saw this one on eBay at the $1500 price.

I think I also found the same engine on a website that helps people source diesel engines. $1500 and the trans is not included.

Yea, price is an issue on this particular auction for sure. I mean hell you can buy a whole Maxima diesel car for less than that if you look around for a while. I could see maybe selling one for $1500 if it had less than 30k on it with maybe a nicely engineered turbocharger added as an upgrade.

This is the buyer's reply:
Thank you for the tip, that link really helps alot. I've been
struggling to find any info on this engine. In case you were
wondering, I'm hoping to drop this into a 1970 240z, turbo it, add
propane, and drive it on WVO and/or biodiesel

Well, because the site's been down for years, and the photos aren't linked right, you still won't see it, but this was the first one built AFAICT:

http://web.archive.org/web/200410140224 ... r.com/tech

Click on "Tech".

==================

Next, my search just turned up the eBay link I'd remembered:

http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/eve/ubb.x/a ... /459104593

More info on it is further down the thread, including about the turbo. The auction had lots of pics of course, but they're lost to us.

==================

There's a not-very-good pic of it at the bottom of this page:
http://sustainableways.com/articles/joshua.html

==================

There's a better picture on the front cover of Josh's (first?) book:

Turbodiesel 240Z eBay car

Post by 83_maxima »

I was re-reading this thread and followed Al's link to the biodiesel forum where he cut and pasted the eBay ad copy into the thread. I love the line where the seller says this is your only chance to own this vehicle because whoever buys it will *never* let it go.

Then...

1971 240Z Veggie Car - $15000

Yes, this is the famous Veggie Car, a 1971 240Z with a Nissan diesel engine, immortalized on the cover of 'From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank'. The car has been gone through, with a new interior, new paint, and a rebuilt Nissan diesel engine. It is turbo-charged, intercooled, and really moves out when the boost kicks in. The car runs excellent and corners like a dream. It has passed emissions in Denver, and is licensed and titled in Colorado. I just had the whole car checked over, including a new battery. Being a 35 yr old car, it always needs some tinkering, but it is real easy to work on. If I can do it, anyone can.

I bought it from Josh Tickell in November 2004, but find myself needing to sell it due to business and family concerns. I drove it from Los Angeles back to Denver, with no problem whatsoever. It runs on diesel, B20, or pure biodiesel, either around town or 80 mph on the highway.

I still have a little work to do on the car, but if interested or have questions, email me. I will post some pictures soon

Ben, I added the text of the CL ad; the ephemeral nature of auctions and ads make it essential to capture the content as well as the link; otherwise, in a month nobody will be able to figure out what the thread was about.

I wonder why the LD28 had to be rebuilt? And intercooling rears its head again.
