SD automatic tranny question

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

SD automatic tranny question

#1

Post by pidder »

Am currently working on swapping in a sd25 into a suzuki samurai. Was wondering if there is an automatic transmission that I could put behind it. If so from what year and model would I look for. Thanks.

The International Harvester Scout II, 1976-80, was available from the mfgr with the Nissan SD33, which is a longer, 6-cylinder version of the SD2x series. It should have the same bellhousing dimensions.

The Scout II diesel was available with an automatic transmission, the Chyrsler TorqueFlite 727, and used an adapter to mate it to the SD33.

See this thread for more details, and also use Search and use "TF727" as a search term.

AFAICR, that's the only AT that can be bolted up to the SD engines. That 727 would be bulletproof behind an SD22, but it would also be a slug, with the SD only having 61 HP on tap, and the 727 having only three gears and no lockup converter.

Thanks for the info. Will stick with the 5 speed that came with it to make it easier for me. On another note, any idea what the sd22 weighs?

JESCO has re-vamped their website and discarded a lot of good info. This is all their current site says:

SD22
53HP @ 3200RPM
40HP @ 2600RPM BHP CONTINUOUS

(I wonder about HP @ 1800 RPM: 4-pole generator speed)

I found this in the WayBack machine, for the SD22:

GENERAL
TYPE: 4-cycle, water-cooled diesel
COMBUSTION: Swirl Chamber
ASPIRATION: Natural
CYLINDERS: 4, in-line, vertical
BORE x STROKE: 83x100mm (3.27x3.94in.)
PISTON DISPLACEMENT: 2164cc (132 cu. in.)
COMPRESSION RATIO: 21.6 : 1
WEIGHT (DRY): Approx. 215 kg (474 lbs.)

This would be for an Industrial SD22, not in automotive trim, but pretty close.
