sd22 in a 1948 Willys Truck.

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Thanks, the temporary driveshaft is just a straight line, it does not have the steady bearing. Dont know if that is causing the vibration?
doesnt really matter, I just wanted to see how the gear ratio would work out with the factory 5:38 axles in the Willys. It is clear that even with 31 inch tires, it is more than low enough. I suspect that 5th gear will be in its happy spot around 60 mph, also, 1st gear is almost too low-2nd seems to be smoother from a stop on flat ground.
I know some people are lukewarm on the stock Datsun/Nissan 5 speeds, but it seems after driving the same Willys truck with a non synchro'd three speed with a sloppy column shift, it seems pretty smooth too me.

"Phase 1" took less than a month. "Phase II" will be to swap in a 4x4 tranny and a Nissan transfer case-found one from an 84 Nissan 4x4, but am a little confused over the interchangibility. After looking at several posts and websites, it seems that the newer one will have a different bearing when swapping the "bellhousing." does this mean that I cant use the 84, or simply need to save the bearing from the 82?

Also-got approximately 35 mpgs cruising around at 45, normally got around 31mpg in the Datsun, but that was pushing it at 65-70.

Couple of updates. Still working out the bugs, I did buy a 4x4 transmisson, now I just need to get a transfer case and shafts then it will be 4wd. (Last time I took it out I got up to 55-60 then the hood flew open, hence the bent hood and rachet strap....)

I havent done any internal modifcations to the motor, but I did upgrade to a K & N filter, a larger exhaust with very few bends, and removed the clutch fan and replaced it with an electric push fan from a taurus. It is hard to compare apples to oranges as it was in a different truck, but my unscientific "seat of pants" impression is that the combination of rhe three mods seems to boosted the power, wouldnt be surprised if Im pushing 70 HORSEPOWER! does feel like Ive lost a touch of torque on hills.

I had just installed a 2" exhaust for the Jeep gas motor, so I just had it slightly modified. I also looked into custom headers, but the price was high ($700).
IMHO, these three mods, that cost about $250-300, may be the best bang for the buck for the SD22.
as a bonus, the black sooty exhaust has decreased sharpely, I suspect because the better breathing/cleaner burning

dn-you may have helped solved one of the problems that I didnt even think of: On long hills the motor becomes fuel starved after about a minute near full throttle.

Im thinking the gas filters may be restrictive...

uneventful update: Haven't had the chance to swap in the 4x4 transmission or other work as Ive been driving it regularly and want to take advantage of the truck while the weather is good. Have put on 500-600 miles getting firewood, hauling rock etc. Havent opened the hood for the last month or two, so I guess it is working out...

I see it has been well over a year since I've updated this thread-so thought I'd give a quick update as well as shamelessly plea for a new motor!

With a newly installed transfer case, larger tires (33x9.50), a winch and a few other additions, like it owner, the truck has gained some weight recently. I haven't weighed it lately, but I suspect she is at least 3500-3600 lbs now, and the extra weight is noticeable on the tired SD22, and because she has to work harder Ive noticed that the blow-by is getting worse. She still drives great, keeps up with traffic and gets good mileage, not to mention works great offroad:

BUT-the SD22 is tired, and I'm looking at options:

Option A) rebuild current motor. Rebuilding the SD22 is imho cost-prohibitive. As much as I like the SD22, I don't see myself putting $2000+ into it. If I have to rebuild a motor, it will be a SD23 or 25.

option B)...or find a JDM or Japanese motor import. I don't know of anyone who has purchased a motor from JDM or others, but would love to get feedback from people who have! (as opposed to friend of friends who knew someone, or citing something posted on Pirate 4X4 forum..)

Option C) Keep scanning craigslist etc.. If anyone sees a SD25 at a good price on the west coast of SW Canada-please let me know!

Check with the Peddle and procure section of the Forum . I have been posting listings on Craigs List when I see them. usually Calif, Oregon and Washington area. so just check in every week or so to see what I come across.

I just bought a 83 Nissan Long bed with 134600k miles and the 2.5 engine. first one I have come across. been going through it to get a base line, filters, fluids etc.... Steam cleaned the engine bay to get 30 yrs of grime off it.

Guy has a push button and light to manually activate the Glow plugs because it is hard to start with just the GP Timer glowing them.
Yesterday I was removing the emissions vac pods and other crap, and discovered they mounted a plate over the #4 GP that houses some of the vac crap. no wonder it is hard to start, #4 is probably never been changed.
:>O

This 2.5 sure has a lot more OOMPH than my 2.2 has. ZOOM.........ZOOM>>>>

I need to reread this thread to get back up to speed, been quite a while ago I read it.

I see the rebuild kits on E-bay for around 5 - $600 or so. has the liners Pistons and other goodies.

These are long lived engines, and incredibly dependable, I have almost 479K on my 82 KC. Did give it a quick over haul at 234K miles. Think it will run for ever.

If you ever need transmission Bearings, this site has the Japanese Nachi Bearings that these Trans came with. http://www.vxb.com/ Just ordered the Input shaft and Counter shaft one`s.
main shaft kit# 9951 and $19.49 and the Counter shaft kit# 14932 and $23.77.

I will up-date as well.
I now use the clear wix 33972 diesel filter. It is about the same size as the OEM filters for the 720. I like it.

EDIT: I looked at your picture again. The 33972 is the size of your pictured filter, but is diesel rated.

On the SD-22 engine in the 82 KC, Iam using a Wix Filter, and a Racor Filter, has a large sediment/water trap and drain on the bottom. uses a small filter inside it. A SM-2000, comes in 2, 10, and I think 15 micron.
been using this set up for the past 30 yrs.

I`ll get the Wix Part# Iam using and post it tomorrow, and the Racor.

I mounted the Racor on the fender mount bracket where the Nissan spin on was, and moved it over to the Fire wall where the little plastic primary one was. so the fuel from the tank goes to the Racor first.

Well I discovered why the original owner had the manual over ride on the Glow Plugs.

I guess it is only Calif that has the emissions on these engines. Vacuum Do Dads and EGR. there is a 4' round unit in the corner by the Wiper Motor with vac lines going to it. On the side of the block at #4 GP is a plate that bolts to the head Bolts and has several Vac pods. This damed thing covers up #4 GP, so Iam guessing it is the original 30yr old plug.

I removed this crap, adj the valves and now she really goes ZZZZOOOOOOMM.....ZZZOOOOOMMMM..... ;>)) WOW totally different truck.

Now Iam looking for none EGR Manifolds.
