Nissan electronic parts catalog (was: Datsun part catalog)

#1

Post by Zoltan »

[edit 18Jan2012: There are instructions on how to install the Nissan FAST electronic catalog tool, eight posts down.]

I just payed an arm and a leg to the local Nissan dealer for 2 rubber boots I could have gotten at half price if I knew the part numbers. Is there a parts CD out there which one could use to look up factory part numbers? I wouldn't mind paying for such a CD.

Please see this post. If you choose to try it, please be patient; I do not have very much upstream bandwidth, and if three or four of you try to get it at the same time, the site will grind to a halt.

After reading that post, read the last post, where I respond to your Q.

Al S.

Found a good parts catalog www.phatg20.net. Register, log in, and go to user uploads. The catalog is on 2 CDs, but you don't need the second CD unless your vehicle is pre-1979. Also. download and install the general catalog (140Mb). If the download feed gets disrupted, you'll need Flashget or some other kind of program that can continue downloading from the point it stopped.

I burnt the 2 CDs, installed CD1 and the general catalog. It works fine for our pickup.

[EDIT by Al]
To install CD 1, read the M$ Word file "0 info\How to install software.doc".

Once you have part numbers try this place...

www.nissanparts.cc/

Always easy to order from, friendly, reasonable on price and you can put the part numbers in right on the website.

Shortcut: http://www.nissanparts.cc/cart/?pn=search , which is the part number search page. I use it a lot.
Always easy to order from, friendly, reasonable on price . . .
I've only ordered one thing from them, and I found that they didn't know what was going on (with my order). I did the web order thing, waited a suitable length of time, nothing showed up and the web status screen said something suspicious, so I called them. Took a couple of calls to get a response, and then the info they gave me (regarding shipping status) wasn't correct.

I did eventually get the part, but I'm not entirely happy with the details of the transaction.

Al S.

The install instructions in "0 info\How to install software.doc" don't work here. That doc refers to "001 info" folder, which doesn't exist.

The "0 info\Program SETUP" object points to the wrong location. I was able to install CD 1 by running "FASTPRG\WIN\FAST\setup.exe".

Fair enough. However, FAST's interface hasn't gotten any better, and <F8> only shows 21 models, none of which is older than 11/85 (D21/Pathfinder).

I "installed" the General file too (fast_gl.exe).

Zoltan, is the 720 model listed in your version?

If you run FAST and choose Help->Version info, does it say "WINDOWS FAST VER. 4.15"?

My mistake: you do need CD II. Our truck is on CD II.
I was able to install CD 1 by running "FASTPRG\WIN\FAST\setup.exe".
If your OS is Windows XP then you have to install FAST from the WIN2000 folder. Also run Fast_gl.exe CD2 has to be in the drive in order to get pickup 720. It's #21. When I put in my VIN, the program pulled up all the right model#, transmission, color etc.

My version is 4.15

The program is quirky by design, I observed the parts guy at the dealership.

This is what I was afraid of . . . spending half a weekend beating at poor software.

I have not been able to get fast_gl.exe to work at all.

I have two CD drives on the 'doze box, and I got the two-CD set to work that way using both drives, and show (42) models (21 on each CD). Then I got ambitious and got it to work without CDs in drives at all, by copying the files to the HDD. Instructions follow:

==================================================
OK, here's how to make the two-CD set of Nissan FAST work.
  • If you don't have one, get a downloader like FlashGet. It worked for me, where WGET wouldn't. If you like FlashGet, donate; I sent them $5.
  • Use a downloader and point it to
    CD1 = http://www.phatg20.net/modules.php?name ... it&lid=124
    CD2 = http://www.phatg20.net/modules.php?name ... it&lid=125
I don't think you have to register. But, if you like their service, donate to them; I sent them another $5.

Don't bother trying to get these .ISO files without a downloader, you'll waste your time, their server couldn't deliver a complete file after three tries and 1.5GiB transferred. I've got them on my server too (CD1, CD2), but I prefer you use theirs if at all possible.
  • Burn the two .ISO files to CDs (or use an .ISO filesystem utility, if you're advanced). Label the CDs.
  • Create a program install directory on your computer (I used "C:\Nissan", which is the default for the installer: KISS), where you have at least ~1.1GiB free to contain files. You might need more room than that, but that's the installed size.
  • Create two subdirectories ("folders", for you newbie types) off your new program directory, label them "Disk 1" and "Disk 2" or whatever.
    Image
  • Copy the contents of CD1 to the new "Disk 1" dir, copy the contents of CD2 to "Disk 2" dir (preserving directories, if you know what that means and care).
  • For W9x, copy C:\Nissan\Disk 1\0 info\NSFASTKY.INI to C:\WINDOWS . If you don't do this now, it won't run, period.
  • Run the install program from the copy on the HDD: C:\Nissan\Disk 1\FASTPRG\WIN\FAST\SETUP.EXE (for W2k & ex-Pee, you can try C:\Nissan\Disk 1\FASTPRG\WIN2000\SETUP\SETUP.EXE)
  • Select "OK" on the first screen. On the second screen, the target directory should already read "C:\Nissan".
    Image
That's correct, and select the upper left button to continue.
  • Files will be copied, and you get a "we're done" dialogue.
  • You should get a Setup screen now. If you don't, Start|Programs|FAST for Windows|FAST Setup. [edit 18Jan2012: for XP use C:\Nissan\Nfset.exe
The following screenshot may vary, but the basics are the same.]
    Image

In that dialogue, click on "CD-ROM Setup"

    Image

and change the number of CD-ROM drives to two, then modify the paths to be similar to the pic above (you have to Browse, it won't let you type actual letters and words, gack!), select "OK" and "OK". [Technical: the info is stored in \WINDOWS\NSFASTW.INI]
  • NOW you can run the FAST program: Start|Programs|FAST for Windows|FAST for Windows. BUT! The first time you run it (or the FAST menu program), the damned installer wants to run again! Cancel it, then try running FAST again, and this time it'll work. Go figure.
  • If you then get "Can't find CD", you didn't follow the above instructions (or I wrote them wrong).
    Image
  • If you get the main screen:
    Image
you've just started to seeth
  • Use <F8> (or select the CD-looking icon on the toolbar) to get a list of models. If all is well, the total at the lower left should read 42:

    Image
Gawd help me, I've just done this install about seven times. Let me know if you can't get through it, and exactly which step didn't work as above.

BTW, although I have the paperMaxima/910 Parts Catalogue, it isn't online and won't be anytime soon. The Nissan FAST Electronic Parts Catalogue is a lousy bit of kit, but you can beat it into submission, if you're patient. Follow the install instructions above, then use <F1> in the FAST program to read the instructions. Although the software is PITA, the instructions in the Help file are unusually well written, so that's some compensation.

I particularly like how, for a 910/Maxima/Bluebird, when you choose an LD28 and then an illustration, it shows in the General group a Four cylinder engine! The subgroups have the correct illustrations though.

I have been unable, on two installations on different computers, to look up the GP system on a Gen1 Maxima:

"Illustration not found"

Can't look up the GP bus bar, the GP, the controller. Fortunately, I can fall back to the paper catalogue.
