Parting out '82 Datsun 720 Diesel

Buy it, sell it, negotiate, haggle, drag it out from under the workbench or behind the garage and make it someone else's problem!

Parting out '82 Datsun 720 Diesel

#1

Post by TruckA »

Over the next week, I'll be picking through an '82 Datsun that is too rusted for me to work with. I'm going to keep all the diesel components necessary to swap the drivetrain in an '84 Nissan that I recently picked up. So just shoot me an email/PM or reply to this thread if there's anything that I can salvage out of the truck for you. If you need pics of anything, just ask. My email address is dlane20@nc.rr.com. The policy is that the first to pay gets the part.

Thanks!

David

I'm picking up a tow bar instead of renting the dolly, so I may hold onto the Datsun 720 a little longer to sell things. Here are some recent pics, let me know if you need anything. Seats, center console, floor mat, thresholds, etc are all still available, I had just removed them when I bought the truck and I have them stored at the moment.

That dash pad looks pretty decent, someone should jump on that.

I am always interested in door locks and the Ign. lock assy, unless someone needs it. Just don't throw them away.

Are you going to install the fast-idle cable assy on your new truck? It's harder than it looks. You have to replace the accel pedal assy which includes the park brake handle assy. It's kind of bitchy to replace. At any rate, keep the cable and bracket/knob. Again, if nobody wants it, I'll take it and store it.

I may end up needing the locks and ignition switch if the guy can't find the key to the 1984 Nissan that I'm picking up, but I'll try to see if I can made from Nissan using the VIN if possible. I hope that service wouldn't cost much more than the price of an average key grind. I haven't really thought about replacing the fast idle cable assembly yet, the guy I bought it from said he used to use it as a type of 'cruise control'. I've never worked with diesels, that's why I bought the truck so I could learn on my own, so I don't know if i really need it or not. If you recommend to use it, then I'll swap it over.

The '82 Ign. won't fit the '84 unless you also use the '82 plastic shroud. That is, it will bolt on but the plastic won't fit right. The '83-on Ign. aperture is larger dia. Look for an upcoming post with comparison pictures.

Not for a rig that old. If you find the keycode on the glovebox door, or on the tailpiece of the passenger side door lock (must remove lock to see it), I can cut a key from that. See this post for details.

We get $20 for making a key by code. So do the guys on the internet that also purport to do this.

It's nice to provide a manual fast idle, and that's pretty much all it's good for, IMO. I am not putting it on my gasser swap, because I'm too lazy to deal with the park brake cable issue, but it could probably be managed in a reasonable amount of time.

That's a bummer about the ignition switch not being a direct fit, maybe I could find something a bushing or spacer to go around the hole from using the 82 switch in the 84 truck if it comes to that point. But, if the 84 has the key codes on the truck, I'll probably choose to use your services for a replacement. I guess I'll see how I feel about swapping in the fast idle assembly after I get the engine mounted and have everything wired, if I don't install it, I'll let it go.

I don't need the fast idle thing, I just don't want to see it tossed. They do break occasionally (mostly the knobs fall apart, from what I've seen).

My first 720 SD came in four days ago, she'd put the wrong key in the Ign and somehow forced the thing to turn and start, then couldn't turn it off! Drove it in, I took it off the column and bolted on an '82 Maxima Ign. assy instead, so she could get home. Fixed her broken one, had her come in yesterday and swapped it back.

On the 720: up to '82, there is no key-minder switch, the key used is the six-cut version, and the escutcheon is smaller. In '83 it moved to the larger escutcheon, the X123 8-cut key, and a key minder. They bolt up interchangeably to the column but the plastic won't fit (Thanks to Andy S. for being the guinea pig on this one).

The owner of the '84 Nissan found the key! So I'll be glad to sell the ignition and locks, just make an offer. So far the only thing that has sold is the steering wheel, and I have some interest in the steering gearbox, the dash, and the instrument cluster from a few folks. Here are some more pics, make an offer and buy this stuff up before I consider ebay, I still do have the center console, seats, seat belts, floor mat, etc all for sale.

Thanks,

David L.

Whoa! Looks like you had 9-10 bolts off and the dash away in about 30 minutes! Was it THAT simple?

This dash was very easy to pull. There are two bolts on each side below the A pillar, maybe two or three below the instrument cluster, there are three at the top near the windshield, and one inside the glove box. Getting the instrument cluster and speedometer cable was a small challenge, but it was definitely the easiest dash pull I've done.

I do have more pics of the parts that I had in storage, so here they are.

Just email me for any pics, I only have 5MB of storage and had to clear off the pics.
