This true, but with enough moisture present to pool, there'd be corrosion issues with any fluid. I read about this specific issue recently WRT a Cozy experimental airplane using acrobatic brake master cylinders that had gotten water in them.

Does this suggest that one could / should bleed brakes with DOT5 to prevent corrosion? If it pools at lowest point wouldn't it be first out of the cylinder / caliper if the drain were at the lowest point?

Just a thought.

The thing is, there are several "lowest points" in a brake hydraulic system. There's not a lot of actual volume of fluid moving around, so any low point will tend to collect water.

I'm working toward keeping moisture out of the system, by making sure the cap's integrity is intact. and I'm not periodically flushing my DOT5 systems until I learn that it's necessary -- the stuff's not cheap.

Al S.

Don't know about a drain but air bleed screws on calipers are typically located at a hight point to facilitate air removal during the brake bleeding process.

Exactly, I've been thinking about this today and really the bleed points aren't at the lowest points on the car. The undercarriage piping would be the lowest but Al's right in that the fluid moves around.

thanks

Busted cb radio

#21

Post by kassim503 »

Today the CB radio in my car started getting weak signals, then some time later it fried up and it dosent transmit and recieve. Could this happen by high cabin temperatures, it is regulary parked in the sun with the windows up, and the radio is mounted on the dashboard.

There seems to be some kind of SWR problem or a short in the antenna, I will investigate that sometime tommorow or sometime this week. I opened up the radio and found some waxy substance that was on the circuit board melted and plastered itself on the inside of the case

I finally got some pictures processed of when my car hit 200k. Unfortunately, only one picture came out, and was out of focus. Ugh, close proximity pictures, not bad for a static focus disposable camera though.

Rolled over on a trip from Buffalo to Stony Brook, sometime in January (IIRC).

[Edit: new links have thumbnails, click to enlarge.]

I think this was taken somewhere in western NY, light snow on the ground.

Probably from the same area

Man, lookin back on the car 2 years ago, she was gleamin. Not so much now :? Probably going to smooth the body over and do a repaint, depending on how much better it looks after I wax it, the paints sheens gettin ugly, and it just makes the car look trashy. But for a 300 buck paint job, its not bad.

I tried to document with pictures when my 280zx turbo turned 100,000 by taking one with the speedo buried (while towing a trailer) but, as I was getting the camera ready, I started hearing tire noises which were confirmed by a quick shake of the wheel.....I had a flat.

First flat in 20 years

Changed it and got another one for a completely different reason 20 minutes later.

A tire valve stem that had been hit by truck tire debris causing it to crack allowed centrifugal force to angle over the cracked stem causing it to leak........at speed.

I used a 3/4 inch flat head self tapper and some rubber cement from my flat kit to wedge the stem straight and drove the car for 4 months that way but at least I wasn't stranded by two flats in 20 minutes.

I never did get that pic.

I decided that this summer my maxima is getting bodywork done to it, smooth everything out, replace the drivers fender, etc. I want it straight and beautiful, beautiful to the point where im not going to drive it for the winter.

Im gonna try painting it myself, after practicing on some beaters. I have free access to a paint booth, and im browsing through some gravity feed HVLP guns. Does anybody have any reviews between different brands? My budget on this is somewhere around a used IR or DeVilbliss guns, something around 100, which means I probably wont be getting a Sata.

After browsing through the users rig section, I came up with a few colors that im considering spraying it, im too much of a indecisive person to pick one and go with it :)

-White, like 1982810MaximaDiesel's, kinda 50/50 on it, I do prefer darker colors, but the diesel beater from C&D is white, and it appears to look decently good. White masks shoddy bodywork well.

-A Grey/Blue mix, much like the Ebay Maxima That I was thinking of buying but sold alot. I do like this color

-Grey, Original color, Like Mark Hartz's sedan Im still 50/50 on it, I have to go out there and try to imagine my car grey, or white.

-Black, blocks shoddy body work well too.

Too many choices, too much indecisiveness, I also dont know if I should run a clear coat or not, im afraid of clear peeling afterwards, but I do want the protection of a clear coat.

If you wanted a non-metallic, you could roller it, see this (long) thread, start at post #2338616

paint job on a budget!?

Or the HotRod magazine version, they basically used 69chargeryeehaa's method from the moparts.com forum above

WOW!

Im picking up a beater K-5 blazer in the next month or so, ill try painting that with the rollers. Im looking foward to it, from the article on HotRod, its idiot proof and easy to do. I think that is a great idea and im definitley going to try it, the supplies for this cost nothing at all, so I cant really lose!

Got some pics from the drive down to FL, took 'em with those cheapo disposables, the quality of the photos are much worse than I remembered, and I used to think they did a decent job.

Its nice how half of the pictures processed where cut in half from the tip of my finger encroaching over the lens :D

Also, it rolled over to 221k somewhere over the trip, cars almost to 1/4 of its way to retirement!

I did that on my honeymoon! Had to pick up some disposables after I forgot my digital camera at home.

Half a picture and a finger...half a picture and a finger...
