Anyone run there Maxima diesel over 85mph consistently

#1

Post by 1982810maximadiesel »

Hello I was wondering I drive my Maxima on long trips all the time I do push the ld28 hard like a litlle under wot to eliminate smoke I believe it crusies around 95mph engine feels great doest not feel strained. I have been doing this for over 10 years. This is just the way i drive it.I do use Delvac 1 sythectic and am very prompt on all maintainance. I do have a replacement knn filter and a 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust system eith a resonator and muffler. This vehicle does not use any oil between 3000 mile oil changes.
Am I pushing to hard? It seems like my maxima loves to cruise at high speeds. suspension kind of evens out at those speeds.

Best car I have ever owned.

thanks,
Bill

At the price of Delvac 1 ($27 for a gallon) @ 3,000 mile intervals, you just go right ahead and drive far above FL's posted speed limit (and the engine's max torque RPM) to your heart's content. :D

Love my Datsun You might think im a little crazy I just invested 3000.00 in maintanance that included
front end rebuilt shocks bushings ball joints etc
Injection pump overhaul it had a minor leak
injector tips cleaned and recalibrated
all engine seals replaced
transmission overhaul 5 speed bearings which i am taking back tomorrow because it seems they did a terrible job it making more noise.
front brakes disc and all
last 6 months
a/c compressor
front crank damper pulley

This car deserves every penny.

These injector tips are not worth cleaning. Between erosion, wear, and carbon inside the nozzle that can't be removed, one replaces the nozzle assembly.

Once these transmissions start making noise (idle rpm chatter, howling, or whining), new bearings will not cure the noise. An abnormal wear pattern and gear tooth clearance has occured. In particular the hot trans/Neutral/clutch released chatter. Open your wallet.

Will it make the transmission at least reliable What do you recommend i do with this transmission?will a rebuild cure the problem meaning I send it out to get overhauled and done. What can I expect? less noise, vibration chatter.

New bearings will certainly improve the transmission's reliability. Even if it's not much quieter, I think it would probably not get any noiser once new brgs were installed. It's really the front two (input/mainshaft and countershaft) that are the weak ones.

Welcome to the site. I hope that you can come away with something of value in our discussions about Nissan diesel engines.

The LD28 is a high speed diesel engine, capable of operating safely above 4000 RPM. I think that the HP rating is 80hp at 4400 RPM but don't quote me on that. The one thing you do sacrifice is your fuel efficiency when running that hard, but circumstances sometimes warrant such. The engine certainly has the ability to perform at that level.

Also, glad to see that you enjoy the car enough to keep the maintenance up to snuff too.

I have noticed increased oil consumption on my '82 (236,000 mi.) when cruising over 65MPH, but on the other hand, very little smoke. Just seems like the engine is revving so much because no OD. If yours is not burning any oil between 3000 mi. intervals consistently cruising over 85MPH, you must be doing something right. How many miles on the engine, 1982810maximadiesel?

One thing you can do to get the RPMs down is to change the rear from the 3.55 one that comes with the 5spd to the 3.36 rear that comes in the 1982 automatic. Also you can change from 185/70R14 tires to 195/70R14 on the front and either 215/75/R14 or 225/75R14 tires in the back. The speedometer doesn't seem to be of concern anyhow so you WILL get an increase in fuel economy, at least to some degree.
One of my 5spd's is set up this way and it is "long-legged" for sure.

I only had one Maxi use oil and it was one that someone turned the timing up (I believe) because it had more "diesel cackel" than any of the others. Most times I never run harder than 65MPH with my bigger tires. (all my cars are that way)

I previously owned 2- 83 Max Diesel Wagons and both went to well over 300K before they got wrecked and both had original aut trans. 1 of which would shudder if you got on it in 1st . This same wagon at 318K had the original shocks which werent' in the bad of shape, had 2 or 3 water pumps at least 1 alternator rebuild and starter rebuild, it was an incredible vehicle which only had to be towed 1 time when the injector belt broke. This car was retired in 1995 after the accident with again 318K.
