Oil capacity in SD25, 1987 D21

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Oil capacity in SD25, 1987 D21

Post by REDNECK »

As I trod down the unclear trail of the oil capacity of the 1987 :?

The capacity of the 87, sd25,.....in the nissan manual is:

7.5L with a new filter, 6.7L without, I went to nissan today.

This is correct as I put in the 5.3 listed in the '86 manual, and found the level on the add line......now that I know the dipstick on my truck is correct, i'll top' er up! :D

It is unusual that the dipstick, does not sit in the casting of the block correctly...it sit's up about, 1/2 an inch, I think what has happend is they changed the pan, but kept the original dipstick tube, but moved the location of the tab that is welded to the side as the locating device.....and put in a longer dipstick.....

saving money and time redesigning they are.....

That's good to know. I've only done 2 changes since I got the truck. When I did both of my trucks at once I found that a 20L pail doesn't quite do it. My other truck takes 14L. Good to know there's somebody else out there who's got an '87 SD25.

Hey there redneck, I know this has nothing to do with oil capacity, but do you have any suggestion for getting the H2O sensor of the frimary fuel filter without breaking things????

to answer your off topic question: i took my filter off, and simply unscrewed the water sensor with pliers...

If it's like the 720 (and it may not be), unplug the sensor harness at the bullet connector that is about 5" from the filter, then unscrew the filter. Or . . .

. . . IIRC, the manual advises unplugging the sensor harness, putting a catch tray under the filter, unscrewing the sensor, open up the vent screw or cracking a fuel line on the filter head, and draining the water/fuel into the tray, prior to removing the filter, to prevent fuel from getting all over everything.

If it's plumbed like the 720, the OFV vent starts at 20 PSI.

BUT ... because the bolt is limited by the 0.015" orifice, the pressure regulator here ....

OFV bolt

... the Lift Pump's fuel pressure line is much higher.

OFV and filter
