LD 28 rescue - you call, we haul. (Eastern Division)

I rescued Road Orphan's partial Maxima from the crank pirates and the Chinese. I now have 3 and a third Maximas. It is 90 some percent complete from the firewall forward. It turns out it is an 82. :D This means I now have a spare trans for the silver Maxima. I don't know what disabled the engine in this latest acquisition. It doesn't appear to be the IP belt. Road Orphan said it made a noise and quit. I'll try to post some pics tomorrow.

P.S.

4 wheels with 3 center caps too.

That's it: you have to come get Myrna's old '83 Wagon from me, you run the official Eastern US Old Maximas Home (EUSOMH).

(Steve, if I put a pair of Maxima alloys on the front of it, and it doesn't vibrate, will you come get it?)

I think I could quit if I had an 83 wagon. Really, I do. I miss overdrive in the 82, but it is fine around town.

Sure, I'll have to fly out and drive that thing back (and pray all the way!) but it could be ok. If you findout that it doesn't shimmy we'll get this done somehow. I could bring tie rod ends with me I suppose but then it would need to be aligned. Let's see....1700+ miles....oye!

And I think it would be more like MWUSOMH maybe (mid-west) if I got it...

Thumbnails don't mess with the view port, but the pics will. Sorry, they are large.

Great pics (what camera are you using?).

Too bad the hood ornament is missing, it's lack really detracts from the first impression . . . . AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

That pass. fender looks really good.

What is known about the valve cover being loose?

whats your plans with it?

Very nice sawzalling!

I made a convertable suburban with a sawzall.

Should staple the front end to a trailer and make it a flat bed pickup, why haul when you can haul in class

I'm pretty sure it is rusty. I know the driver's side is.

Don't know, it was that way when I bought it. Nothing missing under there. There are several things about this car I can't explain.

I plan to salvage all bolt in parts that are worth transplanting and scrap the remaining sheet metal. I may cut it down to just the structural rails and leave the engine in place.

I can't take credit for that. It is Roadorphan's work.

This one didn't die from a timing belt. It can still be barred over, but it doesn't feel right. There are unusual hard spots at certain points in rotation.

Sure it isnt compression?

Mabye it had a mild case of oil starvation

It may be compression, but I doubt it. I barred my 82 over quite a bit not long ago, and it felt very different. The problem is that the engine was already partially disassembled when I got it. I would have to find a few missing parts and put it back together before I could begin diagnostics. I could compression test it, but that would be about it in its current condition.

After pulling the injectors to try to answer another question on the board, I barred the engine over some more. There were still the same strange hard spots in rotation, so compression is not what I felt. :?

Today, I removed the cylinder head, and the hard spots in rotation disappeared. :? There were some pretty heavy deposits in the combustion chambers and on the piston tops. I wonder if these deposits could account for the hard spots in rotation? I think there was enough trash in a couple of cylinders to actually produce contact between the piston and head. I also wonder what caused the deposits. SVO or WVO maybe?

I guess the binding I felt could be in the valve train. I'll bar the cam over by itself to see, but I think I was actually feeling the deposits.

I see no sign of valves hitting the pistons. No sign of a blown head gasket. No cylinder corrosion.

The head gasket was a two notch version. (That bit of info is largely for future reference by me)
