Later edit:
The problem has been solved, seems i did not let it run long enough after startup! I started it revved it up a couple times and it settled down to a normal idle.
thanks for the info guys!

Hello everyone! i am from centralia washington and i have 3 maxima diesels. 2 autos(one with 330,000 miles, and one 5 speed.
None have ever gave me any real trouble until i went down to the corner store! After leaving the store i started the maxima put it into reverse and poof it dies.

I get it towed home and found the timing belt stripped at the crank,s o i installed a new one from the directions in my factory engine manual.
cam lobe up at TDC, lines line up in hole above starter on flexplate.
i found the mark on the crank and the mark on the pump (not the mark with an A) and set it at 20 teeth mark to mark.

started the engine, rattles real loud and smokes. I rechecked and did it about 4 times, same results poor running smokes and rattles like advanced timing.

So i started retarding the timing one tooth at a time ,still ran crappy!
so i timed it with the A mark same results! In fact i found out that this damn thing will run no matter where i time th belt, just harder to start.
Been working on diesels for about 12 yrs makes me feel kinda stupid if you know what i mean.

So what am i overlooking here?
I thank you in advance for any help you may give

Welcome, Chris, to our Sandbox!
  1. Very good post by Matt
  2. More IP belt info, with some pics
  3. Yet more good IP belt info
If you still have Qs after that, come on back.

------------

I travel through Centralia every so often. Will be that way within the next two weeks, to McMinnville, for example.

Don't let the crank pirates at your rigs!
Regards,
Al S.

Here is a message I posted on June 19th 2007, which maybe should be in the "sticky" section:

White smoke is the timing is too early, and black smoke is timing too late.
20 Cogs on the injection pump belt is equal to 7 and one-eigth inches. So if you take the center of one cog and mark it, measure 7 1/8" then put a mark in the center of that cog on the belt. If this already checks out ok, then you may be using the wrong marks on the gear. (A/B) Or have the wrong slot lined up wth the key on the injection pump gear.

*************************************************************

I understand that you may have never taken the gear off, so maybe that does not apply. I have been there myself...moving a tooth at a time... and somhow didn't hit on the right combo!
