Turbo 4x4 build version 2.0

#1

Post by bacho »

As some of you may know I sold my 1985 720 4x4 that I swapped an SD22 in and turboed it. It had gone to my cousin for way too little money, and he decided he wanted to mud the thing. He put a body lift on it and some 33" tires with some dumb stuff and was done. He drives by my house to school every day and I noticed that soon after he started driving it that I never heard the turbo on it, but when I drove it, you could here it from a long way.

Anyways to make a long and sad story short the truck was towed into my driveway with a blown clutch, bad front end parts and a blown turbo charger. He let mud get into the turbo and its history, whats worse is I have a sneaking suspision that the engine got hydro locked because the turbo had filled the intake with oil. I did not think it was a big problem until I was turning the flywheel while working on the clutch that I noticed it was easy to turn the motor by hand.

So anyways today the clutch was removed and replaced in about 3 hours with an Exedy kit from Ebay. It went pretty easy and no jacks were used.

I also removed the turbo and cleaned and inspected it to determine the cause of death. Its dead and I will take it to a shop after class monday to find out if it can be repaired. I am doubt full though.

I need to do a compression check as I am very concered something in the motor is busted bad. The owner said it started making a terrible noise when he shut it down.

What I think will happen if the motor is ok, is that I will end up putting a different ebay or JY turbo on it as I dont think the owner is prepared to buy a $800 direct replacement turbo, I have read about the T3-T4 turbos and does anyone have some good pics of them? Mabye that show the flange mounts and overall size?

Edited for language, sorry about that.

I think I have a couple of them, (1) oil-cooled and (1) coolant-cooled (IIRC). Picture of coolant-cooled in this post.

Pics of T3s are all over the web, of course. Google Images is my favourite.

Seems most of the T-3 turbos I have found have a square hot side intake flange. I dont think I could fit one of those without some major work to my desing for the stainless pipes I have now that were pretty pricey. Does any one have a suggestion on a turbo with a round hotside intake?

I was planning on trying to adapt the stock 14b turbo from the early DSM cars for my SD22 once I have it running well. The one I have is from a 1991 Eagle Talon Tsi. I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for when you say you need a round hotside intake flange, but here's a link to an ebay auction with the same turbo I'll be trying to use. DSM used parts are cheap, so you could find one of these for not a lot of coin. You can get flanges for a DIY project at http://www.roadraceengineering.com/

Update, it will cost $1000 to fix the turbo he had, Currently we are looking for another to replace it. Need an IHI RH05 if anyone sees one around. I am trying to research to see if the RHB5 will work as they are readily available but information like that seems to be very limited.

I can make new flanges on the plasma no problem, but its a pain and the owner would rather not pay me to do that.

EBay has prefabed flanges. They sell just the flanges pre-machined an ready to weld on, in stainless or mild steel.

My internet has been giving me fits so I have not been able to update the thread. Anyways, I found another IHI turbo on ebay that appears the same as mine from the outside but the guy did not know what it was. Just that it span freely with no shaft play. Anyways I went ahead and bought it and it should arrive this week to see how it will work out. If I cannot use it on the truck I will just sell it again.

The theory is that its better to pay more for a used Garret, Borg, or IHI turbo instead of paying less money for a new china turbo.

Update, After many e-mails I finally had to file a paypal claim because the turbo never came in the mail. I did get a 300zx turbo with shaft play instead. :( So I am at it again looking for a good turbo. The truck has been down for a month now and I feel bad about it for my cousin I am gonna do what I can to get it back on the road.

Ok, I found something cool.

http://www.vege-motoren.de/Katalog.xls

I have found the Hitachi HT10 on ebay, which appears by that list to have come on the 2.5 and 2.7 TD diesels that nissan sold. Does anyone here have expeirience with this turbo or these motors. The turbo is brand new at $100 so I am gonna buy it regardless. The owner of it knows nothing about it so if worse comes to worse I can just market it better and sell for a profit.

Got the new turbo on and went for a test drive, the results were great. The new turbo spools very fast compared to the RH05 and I think it will be capable of much more boost. This time I used the stock air filter box from the diesel truck and use some rubber pipe fittins and a little PVC to make it all work. Its redneck as can be but it works and was very cheap. The hose from the turbo outlet to the engine intake was also made in the same fashion at the owners request but its a little too ghetto for me. We plan to change it to a copper pipe intake before long.

I did not get any pics yet, but the overall set-up is about the same as far as placement and such. I re-used all the stainless pipes as the turbo was diementionally the same size as the old one.

Since this turbo seems to work, would you mind sharing the A/R numbers?
Thanks

To be honest, they are not stamped on the turbo and I have no idea on how to find that out.

Thought I would follow this up some, there is lots of seat time on the new turbo now and it was a big improvment. It spools up fast still but can keep blowing more air as you wind it out some. I highly reccomend this turbo.

I would take any lash-up that includes an air filter, in preference to the all-too-common, "I'll get around to adding in the air filter later."

Speaking of that, he is supposed to be ordering some SS for the intake to build. The intake for the turbo has worked great, but the pressure side isnt so good. The heat/pressue has balloned the furnco fittings. I am sure its losing some effiency there.
