SD22 Junk Yard scores

Buy it, sell it, negotiate, haggle, drag it out from under the workbench or behind the garage and make it someone else's problem!

SD22 Junk Yard scores

#1

Post by asavage »

At the Lakewood (very south Tacoma) Pick-A-Part JY today:

1982 720 KC diesel:
SD22 IP complete, with timer assy (advancer), $28
Glow controller, $3
DPC Module, $3
DPC Controller, $9 (sold as a "wiper motor")
Starter, $9 (score!)
and for Salvy, an exhaust manifold, $15

Did not get the injectors, as I wasn't equipped with the correct socket to remove them. They get $2 ea. for injectors. Cheap!

This 1982 truck has 241k miles showing on the speedo. Originally a red cab, it has black/silver fenders and silver bed installed on it. Alternator front housing is cracked but it's still bolted in place and has a belt on it. Why mention the belt? Because it had a second alternator bolted in, on the pass. side, a small S10 Delco on custom brackets of course, just above the IP Timer housing and in front/right of the IP. I'm sure a smaller battery was required to pull this off. I wish I'd had a camera, it was a wild setup, not one I'd duplicate, but it does solve the "no charging alternator, but must have vac pump" problem in a novel fashion.

The transmission is still in it, and is pretty clean at the upper bellhousing end. I may try to get someone to pull it for a spare -- after having changed one in a shop with a lift etc., I'm not going to try it in a JY in the mud unless I have a pressing need, and I don't. But the SD trans' front case is unique to the SD engine, so it's worth having for the case alone. Gasser guts can be put in the diesel trans' case.

I can report that the starter is a whole lot easier to remove when the manifolds are off, and because it was easy to remove the manifolds, that's what I did. Piece of cake, the manifold-to-head nuts gave me no problem, and the headpipe was already unbolted.

Got three glow plugs (physically in good shape) and the GPC temp sensor.

All-in-all, it was worth the four-plus hour drive. Shoots the hell out of a Saturday, though.
Regards,
Al S.

Al, I appreciate you getting the exhaust manifold for me. But did you happen to do that for the sole reason I want to turbocharge an SD25?? I just have to ask, haha. Otherwise I gladly appreciate you doing it for me and it won't be a while til I could pay for it if I do decide to buy it from you. If you could hold on to it for me that would be great. Hey, finding diesel units like that in a yard is worth any Saturday in my opinion. I've always loved going to junkyards with my dad and we've ran into our fair share of diesel cars and trucks that we've sometimes started right up in the yard with only a battery. Gotta love it.

Yup. I don't think the manifolds crack all that often, so I don't really need it, but it was so cheap, and you are planning on turbo'ing yours (when you get one) that you can start off small  with this manifold. And the opportunity to buy a cheap SD22 manifold just doesn't come along that often. I hope you didn't want the intake too . . . I narrowly decided to leave it behind -- possibly because I was down to $6 and they get $13 for intakes.
Otherwise I gladly appreciate you doing it for me and it won't be a while til I could pay for it if I do decide to buy it from you.
Decide now, pay later. I'd rather ship it off and get it out of here if possible. I'm not worried about when you get up ($15 + probably another $15 to ship). This is a community, *my* community. You've been at this game long enough for me to know you're not in it just to kill a couple of cars and move on, like so many others have. IOW, I trust you.

Let me put it this way . . . I went to a JY on my 21st b'day. Take it as you will :) Bought a '57 Fairlane 500 4-door w/272 wye-block and Cruise-O-Matic three speed that day, for $125. Drove it all summer, traded it for . . . but my list is 78 cars deep by now. Excuse me, 79 cars deep, with that '83 I sent to the JY last weekend (sigh).

Al S.

Al, thank you very much and my decision has come to I'll take it for the reason I very well may need it for the turbocharge project. You've looked out for me very well in this case and appreciation is at a very high point for it all. I will make sure to send you the money as soon as I get some spare change once I've become employed. If you can, since it's no rush, could you ship it the slowest and cheapest way through a cheaper company? Is $10 possible for the shipping charge, if not no big deal and I thought I'd ask to at least know before hand? Much thanks and let me know the day you send it out.

Do not shortchange yourself for me -- $25 isn't going to be a big deal for me, but when you're not working, it's a very big deal. There's a member here who has owed me over $1500 for two years, and he pays as he can (special situation). I can generally afford to indulge some hobbies.

Email me your exact address, and I'll check it out. UPS is almost always cheapest for slow. USPS is cheapest for under two lbs but becomes less competitive as the weight goes up. But I'll look into it. I have no FedEx or DHL here in the boonies. Greyhound is probably cheaper for heavier stuff than this.

I have a box at the local UPS Store (formerly Mailboxes Etc) and I also repair their locks, so they look out for me. But shipping has become a lot more expensive in the last three years.

You hit a jackpot, Al ! Congrats. :D

But for the exhaust manifold, what are you going to do with these parts?

You know what I'll do with the DPC controller: clean & test, to compare the test's results to the results of the one I've been having trouble with.

Then it goes on the rusty '82 that I sold to a friend six months ago.

The rest just gets cleaned, tagged, & bagged for possible future use. I went to the JY for the DPC controller & module, the rest was lagniappe.

Ah yes, I now recall. DO keep a watchful eye out for what I would call a "brake-clip" (presses against the worm drive end of the motor armature) when you disassemble the mechanism.
