Never seen it. WAG follows:

Can't see the casting, hard to tell where goes what. There appear to be connections under the top filter which may or may not be part of the engine oil system. If they are part of the engine lube system, they could be an external filter hook up, a primer pump hook-up, a heater or cooler hook-up... Just showing my ignorance here. If any of the above, somebody wanted that engine to give it's best for a long time - so maybe industrial or in some kind of truck. If the top filter isn't part of the engine lube circuit, maybe it's hooked to a heat exchanger in there somewhere - which might mean it was running on veggie (where you need to preheat the fuel); most veggie folks aren't too peculiar about filter specs (can't be)... Two extremes.

FWIW.

they both appear to be part of the engine oil system. the conectors are for an external oil cooler.
was fitted to a land rover. will end up in one of my road cars, maybe getting a turbo :D

That's really wild!

I appreciate the pics.

I can't find any info on that PH2857A filter. I mean, specs. Fram's site disavows any knowledge of it, and it does cross into a Wix filter (my usual reference).

I have, however, run into this in the past with Fram.

My first thought is that this that this is a system set up like other diesels, with a full-flow main filter (around 20 micron filtering) and a bypass filter for the fine stuff (~1 micron filtering). I've never heard of such a thing on the LD engine, but that's sure what it looks like. In that case, one of those filters is probably wrong ;)

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Oh, just for completeness, you should read this thread about the Maxima LD28 oil filters and why the 1983 version is different (as is the Sentra's CD17's filter).
