Thermal Trivia

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

These little key fob sized infrared "touchless" thermometers were on sale so ... I bought one. All you have to do here is point the thing at the subject, be within a couple of inches, and press the gray button.

It's been warm (upper 80's here lately) and after a trip around town, I took some temperature reading under the hood with the engine running.

Intake plenum above throttle body: 121°F
Surface of aftermarket washable air filter (just behind headlamps): 106°F
Radiator tank next to upper radiator hose: 182°F
Oil filter: 186°F
Secondary fuel filter: 102°F

A word of warning: up here, the CEN-TECH digital VOM is sold for very cheap, and my boss just loves Chinese tools from Harbor Freight, so he bought three or so.

I tested one against my Fluke 23 and Fluke 79, and the voltage readings were off by over 20%. This is major. They're useless for the automotive work I do, though they might be OK for checking mains voltage (ie 120v or 240v).

Based on my experience with the CEN-TECH voltmeter, I wouldn't trust anything with their name on it.

BTW . . . what was the cost on that thing?

Dad swims at the local YMCA most every morning. He takes an infrared thermometer with him, and keeps their maintenance guy on his toes. Dad likes his pool water "just right". I forget the brand of his thermometer, but I recall it was in the $60 range. The Ray-Tek I've been using is about double that.

Al S.

Harbor Freight on sale ... $9.95. It shows ice as 32 degrees, boiling water as 212 degrees. It is quite accurate so long as you are an inch or so from the subject.

Regarding your vom experience, don't condem an entire brand based on a single example.
