eBay LD28 crank pirates thread

#1

Post by goglio704 »

I sent this guy a message over Ebay asking about the other parts. I think if I could afford it I'd by Z cars with strokers sell the cranks and scrap the rest. The complete engines still seem to sell for more than the crank - so why do this?

I'd sure like that junk IP he talks about. And salvaging the starter & alternator is always a good idea.

Got a response, he says he already gave the stuff to a friend who trades in scrap metal  He is going to see if he can get the stuff back because he has had a lot of questions about it. I'd say he'll Ebay the stuff if he does get it back, which would be O.K. Apparently wherever these guys learn about the stroker mod to the gasser, also teaches them to make sure they dispose of the evidence :x Maybe we need to find the message boards which talk about the stroker mod and let them know the other parts have value. Either that or post horror stories about trying to do the mod  I'll let everybody know if I hear anything else.

P.S. The login is working much better. For a long time I just thought I'd forgotten how to type.

Sold for $213, a substantially lower number than previously. Maybe the demand has settled?

Maybe, however I wouldn't bet on it. Did you happen to email him about the rest of the engine carcass?

It seems like by the time one emails the seller they've disposed of what remains of the carcass, since they're sure it has no intrinsic value.

Yet another one, auction 8046059640, by the same guy as last time, but with much higher starting price. End time: Mar-17-06 16:01:10 PST

Carimbo, I think you should go pull the crank from that '82 Wagon in the JY -- if I didn't hate working underneath an open diesel, I'd do it myself, but there's no way I'm going to drop the trans and oil pan in that mucky yard to make $100. Just not worth my time. I might convince myself to pull the head though, if I could justify the trip for some other reason. I just don't think there's much call for spare heads, Salvy's situation notwithstanding.

It wouldn't surprise me to find that someone has now made that a singular occupation, seeking out LD28 JY engines and goring them for the cranks.

There is a limited supply of these out in the yards, and I would guess that within four years what remains of the stock will be gone. I could be wrong, but these are going to be funneling toward ebay at an ever increasing rate, that is until the stock is gone.

It would be easier to accept all the cranks going to Z cars if the other pieces weren't going for scrap. I've said it before, but it would be good to find a way to let these cannibals know that the other parts have value too. My one experience with contacting one of these guys is detailed earlier in the thread - very frustrating.

Sold for $248. Looks like the price for these things is dropping off, from a high of $360 a year ago.

Maybe it had to do with the quality of his sales display. :D His first crank had such an impressive backdrop but this last one was plunked on the rear corner of the pickup bed.

From a consumer behavior standpoint it may be more along these lines. As more of these come out the rarity factor drops, and with it consumer willingness to pay a higher price. That coupled with declining competition because others have already purchased. Aprehension about whether other examples will come into the market is relieved as more are brought forward for sale. In essence the buying populace is no longer worried that they might be looking at the "last one".

I still think it had something to do with the pickup bed.

A while ago I went to the auto parts section of the San Francisco Bay Area craigslist and searched for Maxima. A guy in Reno has a "260Z stroker crankshaft" for sale for $400 firm.
Yep, diesel. I responded and told him not to scrap other parts he may have just yet.
