Peugeot 504 gets a new motor!

#1

Post by glenlloyd »

I'm happy to report that my newest project, a 1979 Peugeot 504 D, with a frozen 2.3 D, will be getting a new engine in the near future. A 2.3 TD engine will be leaving Florida shortly (hopefully), bound for Des Moines, to take up residence in my 504. I would have preferred a 2.5 TD engine but those are becoming too hard to find.

Additionally, the 2.3 TD will be mated to a 5 speed box instead of the original 4 speed.

I've already received european headlights for the 504 that will replace the round sealed beam units.

I know it's not Nissan but at least it's diesel.... :)

Whadda you got against round headlights? The lens doesn't pit, and if it does you can buy the replacement entire at any parts store.

Euro=composites? I hate plastic lenses. Just look at any 10+ yr old Escort, Subaru, Volvo and see the badly scratched & yellowed lens. You can't hardly see the road when you're driving one!

Give me real glass lenses on my cars! (or give me something else)

I don't have anything against the round ones, but I like the look of the 504 with the original european type H4 lamps. If I kept the round headlights I would have to buy H1/H4 lamps to replace the round sealed beams. I can really tell a difference with the H4 lenses.

I agree on the glass issues. The original 504 european lamps are not plastic, my dodge van has plastic, and every year I have to buff the yellow fuzz off them to be able to see. The european headlights have a large glass lens bonded to a big reflector, and the lens is designed to channel the light in a specific pattern and direction. You can get round lamps that provide the same functionality but I have friends in France who were willing to dig these up for me.

On another note, the salvage yard apparently "lost" my new engine. I don't have a clear picture yet of what the situation is but I should know more by tomorrow...maybe they'll find it by then.

It's confirmed, the salvage yard doesn't seem to know where the engine went, although only a week earlier they went out to the warehouse and looked at it, then called me back with the particulars...sounds fishy to me!

Anyway, if anyone knows where can be found a good 2.5L TD engine from a 1985-6 Peugeot, or a good 2.3L TD engine from a 1982-5 Peugeot 505 / 604 let me know. Also, would be best if from a manual tranny car since the crank ends are different.

Thanks

This is what I like about the original french lamps, and what I want it to look like..

I came this close to buying a '78 504 that color, in about 1992. Engine smoked a lot though, and the compression check I did on it showed that the engine was shot, so I walked. I really like that Champagne color.

I finally dragged the 5 speed gearbox to the basement this past weekend. It had been living in the rear service porch since before Christmas in a couple heavy duty plastic bags.

I was pleasantly suprised to find that the guy included the clutch slave cylinder with it, crimped and sealed off as well as the entire shifter assembly, boot, tunnel cover, and speedo drive assembly.

I called a yard in Indiana to see about a turbo d motor and when I mentioned Peugeot she said that a Peugeot was a transmission, not a car. Needless to say I didn't find what I was looking for at that yard.

Im not too big of a fan of those plastic composite lenses, if they fog try rubbing them with some rubbing compound they should clean up. I have a 96 Infiniti G20 and it has glass on the composite lenses. I think they should bring back the square sealed-beam lenses.

I'm not a fan of the plastic lenses either, but I don't have much of a choice on the van. On the Peugeot they're glass with a large plated reflector, the biode lamps have two reflectors inside, one for H1 and one for H4, but those are expensive to buy and demand is high. The ones made by Cibie seem to have the best glass, but the Marchal and Ducellier are good too. You can buy square lamps with glass lenses that take H4 or H1 bulbs, by Hella, Cibie, that have a good pattern.

I just purchased this cibie on ebay.fr for the 504, it's used but looks to be in good condition. My friend Phil will send it with some other 504 parts.
