Crankcase Overfill -- how bad is it?

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Crankcase Overfill -- how bad is it?

I changed oil today and overfilled it by 1/2 quart. Would this harm the engine or it's safe to drive as it is ?

I would not drain out 1/2 quart overfill on a 6+ quart system. But I wouldn't ridicule you for draining it either. I do not ascribe much importance to filling to the exact "Full" mark on the engine's dipstick. It's more of an issue with automatic transmissions that see higher variability of temperature, and which don't "consume" oil in normal operation.

Can anyone tell me the exact measurement for the length of an sd22 dipstick? The first one I had broke (I'm sure this happens all the time) and I got a replacement, but I would like to be sure.

Shoulder to the tip: 22-1/4"
Shoulder to 1qt Low: 21-3/4"
Shoulder to Full: 21"

I'm still on the original stick. The stick should glide right in without difficulty.

Thanks a bunch - that is really helpful.
All the Datsun dipsticks I've seen have a weak point at the base of the 2 rivets where they will bend if used improperly. I'm sure the previous owner wasn't as careful as I am when checking the oil, ha ha.
