SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

I just managed to get a set of glow plugs at H & H Diesel. He has had them on the shelf for so long he forgot when! I have switched out three of them (found #2 completely dead). Is there an easy way to get at the # 4. Take off the bracket connected to the 2 head bolts? From below? Any ideas?

I'm not sure what you mean . . . No. 4 is wide open here:

It's No. 3 that I have a problem with. A good 12mm box-end wrench plus a 1/4" drive 12mm 6-point deep socket and a 1/4" u-joint have worked well for me.

I'll take a picture when I get back home. Mine has a bracket attached to the last two head bolts with a bunch of vacuum stuff on it I think. I could get to #3 fairly easy. Perhaps something has been rearranged.

Your pics are always appreciated!

It's possible that yours is an ex-California model, which might have EGR and and EGR control system with a thermal vacuum valve and plumbing.

That sounds like it exactly cause I know that's where it came from.

I don't have a lot of good photos of that model. Sometime, if you are coming to PT, let me exercise my camera (after we hit the car wash to make the engine pretty).

I have 2 pics of my problem but I am having trouble posting them in the message. I click on IMG but I can't seem to import a pic. What am I doing wrong.

Also I hope to start driving to work in PT with this truck so getting together for some pics shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks Al

Commuting

#9

Post by 56SPEEDLIMIT »

Hi Al,
Well, the old pu is commuting daily from Port Angeles to Port Townsend. The rebuilt injectors seem to be working great as I can pull the Eaglemont hill almost all the way to the top in 5th gear. No smoke at all. I still have cold start problems though. Hopefully this weekend I can get to that #4 glow plug behind all the California emission stuff.

Sticker Shock! Last night I put in $97 in diesel and I still had almost a 1/4 tank left. Hope these repairs pay for themselves.

Maybe it would be possible to meet you after work on some Thursday Al. I get off at 4:30. Would love to meet you.

Regards,

Geoff

Glow Plug Access

#10

Post by 56SPEEDLIMIT »

Well, managed to get the last (#4) glow plug in on Sunday. It went easier than I thought. Had to remove some of the smog stuff back there and then work with a mirror to see that darn slotted nut. Got the old one out for testing...It was dead. So now have 4 new glow plugs and it starts right up every time.

Oh, just filled the tank for the second time. After 7 days of commuting the truck ran at just over 37 MPG! Wow, that is nice compared to my other truck..2004 Dodge 2500 with the Cummins... 19.5 MPG.

Now if I could just get rid of that belt squeal at start up :)
