Cold Start Device on Bosch VE

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

these hoses come from under the oil filter and go to the IP

look down the center of this photo, between the rubber hoses for a cloth braid looking hose. it is the 2nd of the two:

while on the phone with nissan to ask about the oil cooling return hose i squeezed this hose and it felt like it cracked! i ran the motor and it didnt seem to leak (yet)
is there a digram from the FSM that shows these hoses so tomorrow when im at the dealer we can have some clartity?

Some Bosch VE pumps have an idle control assembly that's triggered by coolant temperature, perhaps yours has a setup like this, although the ones I've seen don't use hoses that small.

I like Steve's idea, about the Cold Start Device. On the Maxima's VE-style IP, it advances the base timing and props up the cold idle, until the coolant comes up to temp.

Warning: the VE IPs don't get along with WVO as well as the inline IPs.

I have to say, the pictures are not very revealing. Do you have others?

If you go into Nissan with your s/n they have some really good pics of all the hoses. The only hoses that should have to come from Nissan in that corner is the coolant hose, because of their shape. They use just regular braided line, and you can get that cheaper anywhere but there!......eg. Canadian tire, Napa.....ect.

I'm going to add "local" hosting that is user-controlled -- it's in the works, really.

Meanwhile, upload the huge one(s) here, then PM me to remind me to look there (I have not written a notification script yet), and I'll do something nice.

i went to the dealer today, its a long ferry ride away, but i had other business to do so no biggy.

i still cant say for sure exactly what the hoses are for, but i ordered one of each. and the hose that returns coolant from the oil cooler to the block
are you talking about the two that go from the oil cooler to the head?....via the banjo bolt?
one of the hoses is the only one in canada, its in TO.

ill get them in two weeks when i go back over to the dealer.

the number for the aformentioned coolant return to the block from the oil cooler hose:21308-10G05

the two small hoses that i started this thread about21307-10G07 thats the one with the big curve in it,

and 21307-10G08 is the other.

sorry no scanner. maybe a photo of the diagram?

Looks like it could be a CSD. See this thread.

These pics are for the LD series engines.

i guess im not 100% sure thats what i have, my IP looks different of course. but the hoses do go to a cylinder. if the thing in the dude's left hand in the drawing is a csd, then probably. i didnt really see it in the pic till i looked again. in the morning ill check if it does in fact advance a linkage,

yes it does connect to a linkage, therefore i guess it must be a CSD.

Looking at the new photos (above), it's clear that that's the Cold Start Device. Similar to a thermostat, it props up the idle speed when the coolant is cold, via the bellcrank. The main shaft it pushes on is to the back of the Bosch VE IP's advancer mechanism.

Image

If it follows the typical VE operation, it makes the advance curve look like this when the CSD is working:

This is a later model of injector pump.late 1980's.most of the parts are not interchangable with the older units.some older pumps dont have a lift pump and need an electric pump[bluebird].

some units conect a choke cable to rotate the cold start shaft, and a second cable for a fast idle.
the a/c idle up can work on the belcrank or direct on top.i also have one with a timed delay idle dashpot.

it looks identical to my 1990 LD20II.
and 1993 CD20.[reversed]
the RD28 is similar [6 cyl] with a/c fast idle and manual altutude adjustment.[lever on the other side]..
