Condenser on Alternator

I inadvertently crushed the condenser can while changing out the motor mounts yesterday. Looks like it shorted internally and burned the pigtail wire. What is the function of this condenser? Does not appear to have degraded the charging system. I will replace it yet want to know if it is damaging anything in the meantime.

Radio noise suppression is the function if I'm not mistaken. Particularly in the AM band - I think.
