720 Gas to Diesel Conversion Bits

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

You'll want to use the 1981 raditor too. The gasser's lower hose is on the opposite side.

And the 81's positive battery cable, of course. Same reason.

Can you elaborate on that? What part of the SD tailshaft wouldn't work in your 4WD? The extension housing? The shifter location?

I found that following the FSM's advice worked best for removing the gearset and adapter plate from the "bellhousing" (front case half):

I have a 2wd, but use 4x4's for tranny parts, if you are lucky you will only have to re string the mainshaft with the one out of the 4x4, and put the cases back together. keep in mind while doing this that you ratio's might be different ....2wd to 4x4, on my old girl i have found that the 4x4 ratio's are actually better.....for economy......the mainshaft is different is it not?

From the time Al did a gas guts-to-diesel gearbox swap, I've been interested in the net effect of slightly taller mid gearing in my '82 720 SD.

The gas gearbox up through '83 has gear ratios:
3.321
2.077
1.308
1.000
0.833

The diesel gearbox up through '83:
3.592
2.246
1.415
1.000
0.813

In '84, the new and improved 2nd gen gas 4x4 got a new ratio set:
3.359
2.057
1.361
1.000
0.813

The taller ratio's have had little effect on mine, but i only use it as a mode of transportation not as a work truck. first gear is generally the biggest differance and with a load you notice it , but for just bummin around no differance is really noticed.........and their are alot more gas job parts out their than diesel and alot of the time a lot cheaper!

I've seen an adapter plate available on the net to mount an SD22 infront of a toyota P/U 5 speed. Don't know if that helps anyone one way or another but just throwing it out there. PS anyone know the gear ratios to the toyo trans?

Excellent Info!

They are quoting $325 for the SD22--Toyota, which I assume is $Aus. I emailed about shipping prices, just so that we will all know.

I hope their adaptor IS a plate ... and not something so thick as this adaptor behind this 1982 2.2 toyota diesel. Certainly would create firewall/drive tunnel space and other problems down the line.

Wonder what transmission would have bolted up to this thing?

Philip,
I think that their adapters are bell housings(or the front half of the case as some like to call it), not plates.

I saw this image on their site
Image

It is not the unit in question, but it is a "typical" unit.

Return to Rodshop and scroll down. Click down on "engine/transmission adaptor". There are adaptor plates ... there are adaptor bellhousings ... quite separate things.

This link will take you straight there.

Philip,
Yes, There is more than one product line offered. The part numbers given by TooManyIdeas are for the bellhousing line. BH 19 is one of the parts listed on the Bellhousings and Engine Transplant page.
