Remote oil filter bracket needed.

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Remote oil filter bracket needed.

#1

Post by crzhors »

I've finally posted pix of our CN4-33 marine version in 'users rigs'.As you can see there really is no room to cleanly/efficiently change the old canister oil filter up against the starboard stringer. Is there an adaptor available to route the oil to a remote filterhead?
As I get the picture loading thing practiced I'll post more progress pix.
Thanks, and hope your getting stronger Philip! Hasta, JD

I am not aware of a direct way of remote mounting a filter to the cannister base -- though I once did have our job shop fabricate one to convert my '65 MB 190D from cannister to spin-on, but that involved both heliarc and machining.

What I propose is to investigate if your cannister adapter can be replaced with the US automotive base. If your oil cooler can interface with the US spin-on base, then remote mounting the filter from that point is a snap, as the automotive base is set up to accept the Ford (Wix 51515, Fram PH8A) filter and adapters to pipe the oil off and back from that is an off-the-shelf item and very inexpensive.

Note that you want one from an SD Four, not an SD33, which typically uses a canister filter mounted horizontally. You can't adapt it because the oil cooler lines are different anyway.

I'll ask around for "Oil Filter Bracket". Seems there are two versions. For SD22 the "spin-off" design tilts the filter forward about 10-15 degrees.

For the SD23 and SD25 the spin-off filter is verticle (accomendates Bosch VE's injection lines). For the SD22 with Bosck Inline injection pump, you could also use the vertical filter bracket.

SD23/SD25 are vertical.

I happened across THIS "bracket" for SD's that is SO SPECIAL that it is still unused (could get it for very cost). The unique design is the oil ports using hoses to a remote oil temperature exchanger. The filters are still can/cartridges like your CN4-33. It also has the oil can vertical.

Good morning, Philip, that adaptor is Real Nice, a shame its the old can style...PBknowles found me a base and remote adaptor in his stuff,so I'll order a remote head, and then the challenge of getting it down here to Central America in an economic fashion. Your reprints of the manuals are really helpful, Thanks again, back into my bilge, JD
