Waterpump failure

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

Waterpump failure

#1

Post by Land-Rover SI »

Hi.

I have a SD22 dieselengine from 1982 in my Landrover SI 86" from 1956.

Today the bearings on the waterpump got so bad i have to replace the pump urgently. I live in Norway and the main Nissan-dealer here cant find a new pump for me in Skandinavia or Europe. !!!!

Is there any other manufacturer of engines/cars that uses the same pump with the same type of fitttings?

Is it possible to get a new pump in the US?

Looking forward to get help with this problem :D

For 1982, try as a DATSUN 1982 SD22 (2164cc) engine in Datsun 720 pickup truck. Those water pumps are common throughout the world. You can also use the Nissan 720 pickup truck, 1984 SD25 (which may well be the update part) but one of the three bolts will be about 10mm longer. No problem.

NOTE: The "industrial" "marine" versions use a different water pulley ("sheave") having greater off-set than the 720 pickup truck. So take a close look at the thread Al has pointed you to.

To the best of my knowledge, a compatible pump was not fitted to any other engine.

The SD22 was fitted to the Datsun/Nissan model 720 pickup (truck, lorry) in many parts of the world (1981-2), and what is probably the same pump was used on the SD23 and SD25 (720 pickup, 1983-1986.5).

The SD engines began production in approximately 1963, up through at least the late 1980s. They were used in agricultural applications (water pumps for farming), forklifts (fork trucks), and small marine applications (auxiliary engines for small boats). It was a very popular engine.

Yes! They are widely available in the US. For example, here is one from NAPA, a large automotive parts distributor in the US:

NAPA NWP559198, US$67

Thank's for good help guys.

What is the difference between the one for 67$ and the one for $60,79?

http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPages/N ... Pump+-+New

The fan is mounted with 4 bolts on the axle of the pump, are the threads for the mountingbolts on this pump in metric size or is it inch-threads?

Wich one should i order?

Regards,

NAPA does not manufacture any parts -- only labels! NAPA sells parts from several different suppliers.

The cheaper unit's description says "cast aluminum". The US$68 does not state material, but I recognize the NAPA "line code" ("NWP") as the better line of pumps, and that is why I chose to display it.

The sheave mounting holes/studs on the hub will be 6mm, I have no doubt.

Try to avoid pumps made by "GMB" Philip and I had similar problems to the same brand of pumps, they appear low quality and they seem to wear out prematurely. I believe the cheaper one (60 buck) may be a GMB, usually GMB is the NAPA cheapo.

Thanks for the good advice guys.

Im now waiting for answer on my email to Napa to see if there should be any problem for them to send the pump to Norway.

Here in Norway the official Nissan-dealer wants 445,45$ for a new pump from Nissan in Japan!

I can't believe that there is no supply of this water pump closer to you!

If NAPA will not ship to your location, PM me and we can work out getting one to you via a less direct route.

How about .....

http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductList ... Water+Pump

Keep in mind this is the automotive SD22 ... not the industrial (different hub).

NAPA lists two WPs too, but they are not actually in stock. We are finding this to be typical for old Nissan diesel parts with the chain stores.

I've had mine rebuilt for a little less than the cost of a new/rebuilt unit. A spare is good to have!

What we know for certain is that the GMB brand is not good. I am suspicious of the cast-aluminum replacement pumps as well, not because aluminum is bad but because it seems to be an indicator of lesser quality.

Beyond that, I don't know.
