SD22 burning oil

SD diesels were widely available in the US in the 1981-86 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and in Canada through '87 in the D21 pickup.

SD22 burning oil

#1

Post by snowboda720 »

My dad bought our SD22 brand new in 81 (82 model) and said it burned oil since day 1. Over the years, consumption has gotten worse. Has anyone used or heard of a rebuild or re-ring kit that works? I've seen 1 on ebay but don't know whether to trust it or not. Any advise will help a lot.

15w-40 is fine for temps above freezing.

I ran two oil tests on that grade. However, my engine experienced improved oil consumption (3400 miles per quart) using NAPA branded oil which is actually Valvoline.

With Shell Rotella, consumption was 2500 miles per quart. The engine currently has 168k miles on this odometer ... +12k more on the original meter that was exchanged because it did not have a tripmeter.

The original owner told me the truck exhibited spells of high oil useage from the beginning ... always associated with excessive and continuous high RPM under high loads.

What, like 70 MPH in a truck that has a forklift engine and is geared for 55 MPH optimum?

[g,d&r]

3400 mi. per quart is very good oil consumption for an SD22. I would be pleased with half that. These things are not Toyotas.

Agreed. It likes me

I had a 1990 Geo Prizm (Corolla) that I bought new. When I sold it with 285k miles, the head had never been off and it was consuming about a quart per 2800 miles of 10w-30. Mobil1 nearly all the way. Our replacement ('03 Corolla) may ... use 8 ozs in 5,000 miles. Stunning.

I am convinced that the lower volitility of recent synthetics and particularly 'natural' engine oils is responsible for improved oil consumption in nearly all engines.
