Why does the 83 use a different oil filter?

I've been using the Wix 1085. Think of it as a short 1515 (ie PH8A).

I have been doing some (just a little) research on bypass filtration as an add on. The toilet paper based units confuse me a little - how do you select the correct arse wipe to use in them? Amsoil and Wix sell spin on type units. The Amsoil (2 micron absolute) are expensive and the Wix are only 6 micron nominal. I don't know where I could mount it, but I'd like to remote the full flow filter and add bypass filtration to the 82 engines.

TTBOMK, it does not make a whole lot of difference what brand or style of TP is used, as long as it is not loose. That leaves out brands like "Charmin" in the US. Various Scott/Kimberly-Clark varieties crop up on discussions, and that's what I'll be using in mine.

83 filter base and cooler is on the left 82 on the right. While the oil coolers appear to be identical, that is about it. The mounting bolts for the 83 need to be 20 or 30 mm longer than the 82. Other views are available if anybody is interested.

I went to Autozone yesterday and they gave me a $10 K&N filter for the '83 diesel.
O-Rielly has a $18 Wix 51094 on order for me.
I will compare the two and see how they look. But AZ might have a better deal...especially considering the K&N is normally a "super-premium" filter similar to Mobile One filters.

I do not like K&N filters. And some Ford products have a sticker on the air filter housing from the factory, stating that oiled elements can cause engine damage not covered by warranty. Good enough for me: no oiled elements in my rigs, ever.
I used K&N air filters in the 70's. Toasted one race bike's rings in one race when mud got through it. I had a GALLON of the special K&N filter oil, kept it around for probably 20 years, eventually used it up starting bonfires.

what specifically is bad about K&N air filters? I thought they were the hot ticket for performance applications?
And is is it applicable to the K&N oil filters too?

In a nutshell: I don't believe that the K&N, which does not in most cases have more surface area than the OEM filter, can pass more air with less restriction than an equivalent paper element, and still maintain adequate filtering efficiency.
Yes, the warranty disclaimer absolutely applies to K&N filters, in Ford's case. I suspect that the issue is that many (most?) people over-oil the K&N-style oiled element. Oil then coats the MAF (which is a heated wire) and fouls it, changing the fuelling due to a now-faulty sensor, which puts the emission system out of compliance and reduces cat life -- cats must be replaced by the mfgr if they fail under 100k miles, a very expensive repair.
That's the way I read between the lines about the warranty and oiled elements.
Reoiling correctly is something that can't be guaranteed, lots of people seem to have problems accomplishing it right.

I'll agree with Al on the K&N AIR FILTERS. Paper filters are better at filtration and cheaper. The hp gain with a K&N is pretty inconsequential in a street application, and could be gained somewhere else in a performance application if you are someone who is dead set on having that add'l 3 hp.
The K&N oil filters are a different story though (IMO). I have used them in the past on my vehicles because they are better than anything else the FLAPS sell.
Lately I have just been using Napa gold filters, and will probably continue to do so, but if your choice is FRAM or K&N at the FLAPS, I'd consider myself smart for choosing the K&N (and spending the extra 6 bucks).

I don't think I've ever actually changed the 1983 Maxima (Sentra CD17) oil filter . . . until today.
I discovered, as "odie" mentioned upthread, that the Wix 51094 comes with a replacement o-ring that must be installed when installing the filter, in order for the internal bypass filter to seal. Worth noting (which is why I'm noting it here).
This is detailed in the 1983 Maxima FSM on page MA-30.
