Which one is the GP Module?

#1

Post by dieseldorf »

I've salvaged two black modules from my junked Maxima. One is a flat black box, about 4.25" x 4.25" x 1.25" and it says DEC MODULE on top. It has a 13 pin connector, whereas the wiring diagram for the GP control unit shows only a 10 pin connector. The other module is about 4.0" x 3.5" x 3.0". There is a 20 pin connector on it. Inside is a circuit board and a small electric motor.

In terms of dimensions, the first one sounds like the GPC, while the other sounds like the voice module. Not sure about the number of pins. I'd have to pull out a spare to know for sure.

The Maxima GPC is on the driver's side footwell (1981 only) or under the passenger seat ('82-83). It looks like this.

That is The Talking Lady ("Bitchin' Betty"). It bolts to the driver's side knee bolster.

The FSM is really silent on the actual wiring of the EGR control system, but checking the overall diagram in the "back of the book", the EGR control unit shows 13 wires, so I think that's what you're holding.

I thought I had a picture of an EGR control unit, but I guess I just have a loose unit, not a pic of it. I'll try to fix that tomorrow. Pretty sure the "DEC" rings a bell too.

Here are the pics of that module I am talking about

Well, if this is not the GP module than I do not have one. In that case I will build my own GP module based on a micro-controller. It will include radiator fan control, overheat alarm and more. I am going to need some input on that.

That appears to be the controller. At leat that is the type of connector mine has.

The mounting tabs and overall shape (and that stamp) looks odd though. My 81 has the diesel-kiki sticker like in Al's pics.

Your picture shows a 13-pin connector: that is the EGR controller, not the GPC (see my post above).

Have you considered an aftermarket GP Controller?

I probably have a spare OEM GPC, but I do not have the matching harness connector.
