LD28 oil pan

#1

Post by Dslsmoke »

Hi all!

Been wondering, :?: while reading some of the posts about swapping an LD28 into other vehicles, there has been a need to modify the oil pan to a rear sump.
I know Nissan made a rear sump pan for the industrial engine available from http://www.jescoweb.com/LD28.htm [edit 15May2013: bad link] Je$$$co for a price of course!.

Wouldn't the pan from a 280Z engine work without a lot of modifications?

Like on THIS POST , I want to do something like it.

Thanks:

I can't find it at the moment, but there is another thread that talks about pan modification. It was related to swapping an LD28 into a Zcar, but that is about what I remember. I don't know if he modified the LD pan or used a gasser pan. When that thread is found, we can link to it from here and this thread can serve as a collection point / index for LD28 oil pan info.

The thread Matt is thinking of is Samee's 240ZD project, a long thread with lots of pics he took. Due to the need to make a custom oil pickup (the LD block's pickup oil gallery is apparently not drilled from the front of the block), I don't know if a L24/26/28 pan will work.

This was Rev. B of the pan, IIRC:

Later in the thread, Samee says,

For example, the gasoline engines are DEFINITELY interchangeable across all early Z cars, and there are only two places for the oil pan to dip: the front or the back. I think it's basically impossible to fit that diesel oil pan into a Z.
I think that that pan pic above is a L28 pan with the channel added for room for the oil pickup. But I'm not certain.

AL,

I had just found that post, read it and was ready to reply when you beat me to it... :D

So mostly what I get from it is, the pans are interchangeable, with the modification (channeling) to clear the pick up tube and of course the longer tube itself.

The bolt pattern from pan to block should be the same between a gas and a diesel. RIGHT?

That opens up some possibilities.
